[00:13:27] it's for Tony which is a new A24 movie that stars Dominic Sessa of The Holdovers fame as Anthony Bourdain. And this is, I think that music biopics could learn a thing or two from this movie. About like chef biopics. Yes. Chef biopics have a much more refined sense. No, but this movie. And they could in turn learn something from the aviation biopics.

[00:13:55] Those high flyers, those mestical, magical men. Mestical? Hey. Let them cook, please. Methical. Yeah, mythical. No, this is a great movie because it doesn't try to encompass everything about Anthony Bourdain. It focuses on a very specific window in his young life. It has enough of like calls to what people would come to love about Anthony Bourdain

[00:14:22] and just like showing what kind of person he was when he was, you know, in his 20s. And it has a lot of heart to it. It's really funny. And it's directed by Matt Johnson, the same guy that did Nirvana, the band, the show, the movie and Blackberry. I liked both of those. Yeah, they're great. And so it's just, it's fantastic. I was really impressed with it. I really liked it a lot. Okay. Comes out in August, I believe. Oh, I said okay. August 7th. You got really heated there at the end.

[00:14:52] Well, we said okay. We let you talk about your movie. You know what? What? You're still wearing a sleeveless Punisher shirt. And granted, when people hear about that shirt the first time, it'll be in the next episode. It'll be right now. Because you just did it again where you're just making people time travel. Look, time has no bearing on life. Have you never recorded two podcasts in one day? Has it never happened to you? No, it happened previously and we forgot. And you fucked that one up too. Well, you fucked that up too. Do you know what I like about this film?

[00:15:21] The idea of this film is it's only a hundred and like four minutes long. Yeah. It's not a real long film. Yeah, we're not getting a two and a half hour, you know. I'm wearing a cut off Punisher shirt. Okay? I'm wearing it. I'm wearing it. The funny thing is, Anthony Bourdain wears that too. And now it's just gonna be, it's gonna be so weird when the next episode comes and now we do this again. Cause it's like, it's even funnier because you're wearing it. Yeah, people are gonna know. They're gonna know. But no, it's really good. I can't recommend enough that you guys go see this. It's fantastic.

[00:15:52] I will. Even if you don't know a lot about Anthony Bourdain, cause I haven't seen more than maybe like an episode or two of No Reservations and I just know, you know, who he was and what his overall vibe and persona was like. And I love the hell out of this movie. Okay. Can't wait to see it. Is he, I don't know anything about him. Mm-hmm. Restaurant critic, you know, turned cultural phenomenon hero. I mean, well, chef turned international like a traveler. Yeah.

[00:16:21] Host kind of just like, but he also, he was, so he wanted to be a writer when he was younger. Okay. He is a brilliant guy, but he also has a streak of like, you know, being a bit of a rebel kind of rambunctious, you know, renegade type and also sometimes bullshitting, you know, his way through stuff. Um, but he was somebody who really had some interesting philosophies on just living life and he saw a lot of different things in his experiences. I only ever knew him as the traveling. Yeah.

[00:16:50] You know, later on in his career, obviously. Yeah. But he's not like a travel host or somebody in the way that like. Right. I know what you're saying. He's almost like a travel documentary. Yeah. I know what you're saying. Yeah. There's, there's some like style and edge to it. I know what you're saying. Let me tell you again. Like he doesn't like, you know, just go to a place and show you a picture. He like actually is a documentarian. And you know what they say about Greece? I'm going to fight you. They say it's the oldest. What? What? Idiot.

[00:17:19] Speaking of Greece, Nate, you saw a movie, didn't you? I did. He set it up so well for the Odyssey and you're like, no. I did. Yeah. You probably saw that. I went to the theater. But you saw the horse movie. So my son, Finn was, he's 16. He doesn't like to hang out with me as much as he used to. And he's just busy. He's got work and football and all these kinds of things. A mortgage.

[00:17:49] And he's like, yeah. He's like, hey dad, can we go see the Odyssey this week? I'm like, you bite your ass. Heck yeah, we can. And so I left work early even and went to the theater. And we went to one of our better theaters in this area, which is about half hour, 40 minutes away. It's the Imagine Theater in Portage, Indiana. Yeah. And enjoyed every second of this film. Yeah. And my daughter, Nora, saw it the day before.

[00:18:18] And I don't, it's still pretty early so I don't want to give you any spoilers. But she said, dad, there's going to be a scene. You're going to love this film. She goes. But she said, dad, there's going to be a scene. And you're going to sob. Oh, yeah. I know exactly what scene she's talking about. And there was a scene that I sobbed. Yeah. And we talked about this scene already and I sobbed as well. Oh. And it's just, I was like, well, okay. So my Instagram is also filled with- It's a scene towards the end, right? Yes. Yeah. And I think your guys as well, because we keep on sharing things back and forth with

[00:18:47] each other on Instagram and our thread. But there's a lot of Christopher Nolan probably in your feed too, right? Oh, yeah. There's actually- And honestly, for good reason, I watch every interview with Matt Damon. And every interview with Christopher Nolan, I am obsessed with this film right now. And it's not even because I love the film itself. I am obsessed with the creation of this film. The craftsmanship for all the things they did. How they created, literally went back and created, like recreated instruments that no

[00:19:16] longer existed to create the soundtrack. Yeah, Ludwig Warrenson did that. The amount of attention and detail that went into this film is just, it's why you love film. And every dollar they make is well deserved. Yeah. Well earned. I think it's on track for now. Well, don't worry. They're going to come out with a movie next year. It's going to be called I Play Odysseus. And you're going to be able to see how it came together, the decisions made, how hard he had to fight to get it made.

[00:19:45] It is so good. Well, here's the interesting thing about Christopher Nolan. British. Ah. American British. So his mom's American, his dad's British. Hey, governor! Uh, lived in Chicago for quite a while, actually. Actually, his brother was the one who grew up in Chicago. Is that right? Yeah, Jonathan Nolan. Um, but uh, yeah, I only know this literally from my Instagram reels. Yeah. Like, uh. And uh, to piggyback on that, the other thing that has been interesting seeing all over

[00:20:14] the internet too is because of how big the Odyssey is, is all of the funny jokes and memes that have come from it. Yeah. So many funny things out there. Tons. One of my favorite ones that I saw recently is there's a popular song out there called Where Is My Husband? Right. And someone did a very quick edit to that song using clips from the movie and matching every perfect shot from the movie with the lyrics of the song. That's pretty great. About it. It's, it's great. And then you have people taking stuff like just little clips from other movies like in

[00:20:42] Dogma, uh, you have Matt Damon who plays Loki and it's from the, towards the end of Dogma and it's just, it's Matt Damon all throughout Odysseus. She says, fuck, I just wanted to go home. Yeah. It is though this film and in at this point, I, it, it, you can't like, you know, undersell it. I mean, it's just everyone talks about it and for good reason. Go see it on the biggest screen possible. Even if you have a, if you have just working theater, see it there. That's fine. You're going to love it. But like, see it in the theater, see it.

[00:21:11] And there's a lot of memes too about like, why is this film so loud? It is loud. Yeah. Right. But for a reason. Um, it is the way film is supposed to be made. It is every detail thought about, you know, every minute is, is worth it. Uh, just so much fun. And also like, I enjoyed talking to my son about the film and the themes and the ideas

[00:21:36] and, uh, you know, stoicism, even though it was before, you know, uh, stoicism, we, we talked about how kind of it was influenced by that. And we just had a great time with it. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. I mean, they do a pretty damn good job of portray. Odysseus is portrayed as in the poem. It's that he's a brilliant leader, but also has made tactical errors for the sake of wanting

[00:22:03] to do something either selfish or just, he's just a little arrogant about being that great leader. And I think the movie did it. Honestly, I was wondering how they were going to do that part of it. How can you make him seem like he's not just an asshole for leaving or an asshole for saying or whatever, but it, it really grounded the character and didn't make him, it made infallible, but it's like going back. He humanized him, right? Yeah. Taking, taking the shortcut. Who the, who, that seems like a pretty big wonder right off the, off the bat.

[00:22:30] But he just, man, makes that decision and has to live with the consequences, you know? This is such a good film. Yeah. Just cover to cover, baby. A little indie film if you can see it in a little indie film. I want to, I want to go see it. I don't need to see it on IMAX. So. I know. We all know. Okay. We all do. Shut up, Sleaze. How's it feel? Like these guns do you? Yeah, you like these guns? These guns don't run. The funny thing is I, I know I'm not ugly, but you don't have sleeves. These sleeves, these sleeves aren't.

[00:22:57] These sleeves are made for running and that's just what they'll do. One of these days, these sleeves are gonna run on. He'd do something. That'd be fun. Nothing fun. No, you walked into that and you didn't know where to go with it. I needed to run into it. Ben, what did you see? Uh, we are continuing the, uh, the, the different Spider-Men. Uh. Spider-Men. Spider-Men. The amazing Spider-Man was up, uh, it was the one where we're just finished.

[00:23:23] Uh, and I forgotten about Andrew Garfield's, uh, like the, I forgot that the origin story happened the way that this happened. It's been, I probably saw that movie once when it came out. Yeah. The, the working on Osborne's lab and getting all those spiders dumped on him and all. It, I don't know. It was, it was definitely a different take and I thought we just watched the Sam Raimi ones. It's such a boring origin story to see the same one over and over again, but I was like, Oh. And they tried, they tried to spice it up a little bit by making, uh, Uncle Ben into a spy or, you know. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:23:53] Um, interesting approach. Peter's parents, you know, that's weird. It's a weird angle, but whatever. Um, oh yeah. Not Uncle Ben. Sorry. Yeah. But then Uncle Ben and I may be a little bit more cryptic than they should have been. Right? Yeah, exactly. Um, so anyway, uh, but in order to get to the amazing Spider-Man, we had to get through Spider-Man three. Mm hmm. And so, and are really still wanted to watch it and we did, we did finish it up. We watched it. Oh, cringe. Now dig on this. I forgot how cringe it really is. It was so, there was so campy.

[00:24:22] So, so over the top. Yeah. And just literally cringe inducing. I was not, I was having trouble watching it. This is just creepy. Him asking her, yeah, go make some more cookies. Like just this weird emo idiot. I don't know. It was ugh. But, uh, when Peter Parker is this cocky version, uh, there's a scene where Spider-Man gets the key to the city. Mm hmm. And Ender and Rune, Ender is nine and Rune is 12. And they're both still pretty innocent kid kids.

[00:24:51] And Ender especially just has no clue, no concept of relationships or like why a man would want to, you know, get a kiss. Still icky. So, the part of the movie is when Stacy's on stage to present Spider-Man at the key to the city. He's, he spins upside down and he's the one that says plant one on me. It'll be good for the marketing, whatever. Yeah. And of course, that's the famous kiss that MJ and him shared. Mm hmm. So, right when she kisses him and he kisses her upside down like that Ender just looks

[00:25:20] over his brother and is like, oh, that's just not good. And just, and he had, I'm like you buddy, you have no idea like the context of it. Yeah. But even he knew in his little child brain like you don't kiss, you don't recreate the kiss man. You just don't do that. So, that was the best part of that movie was that reaction that Ender had to it. That's funny. Uh, beyond that, you know, Thomas Hayden Church doing whatever, you know. I don't hate Topher Grace as Eddie Brock. I don't. Even though it's not a good version of the character of Eddie Brock, I think Topher Grace

[00:25:50] is good in the role. And I think that they, he did what they asked him to do. Yeah. He played it probably the way they wanted him to play it. Yeah. He's a good weasel version of Peter Parker. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. Truly. Yeah. And, um, the only thing that I actually genuinely like about this movie is I like the symbiote theme because it feels very noir. Like, well, also that was one of the things that Rune had mentioned. Uh, we, we had to pause it, uh, you know, a little bit after halfway point.

[00:26:19] Oh my God. It was very, uh, Batman Forever actually is what the way, what it reminded me of. I saw you pointed him to do it again, Nate. He knows. I can see you. You're sitting right next to me. He knows it. Yeah. Okay. Okay. All right. We have a thing. I lost my train of thought now, you idiots. I can't remember. Uh, the one thing you said you liked or that Ender commented on about the score. George Stacey. What?

[00:26:47] You said Ender's, I started doing the score and you said Ender or someone started commenting that they noticed something. You see, Anthony Bourdain. Noir style. Making me feel bad about my kids. That's what I was doing. What Rune had said. Noir style. No, it has no, just move on. Just move on. Just move on. It's fine. It doesn't matter. Anyway.

[00:27:13] Spider-Man three was one of the biggest disappointments that I had when going to the theaters up until that point. I was so hyped for Spider-Man three. Uh, I still remember the cool lenticular teaser poster that they did where it's a closeup of the Spider-Man suit chest. It just says three on it. It doesn't even say Spider-Man. And when you walked past it, it changed from the red and blue suit to the black suit. It was one of the coolest teaser posters. I was so excited for that movie.

Rune was, uh, we had to pause that a little bit after halfway through and then we came back to it. And then at that point the venom symbiote crawled up the bed post or whatever. So, but when that scene happened, uh, room goes, Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Cause they forgot it was a venom movie. It's been that long. And he really was taken by surprise that there was venom. And so that's like, if that's all you really need to know, if the kids were forgetting what

[00:28:10] movie they're watching, not, not probably the best movie. Yeah. It's, it's too much movie. It's, it's around two and a half hours long. Sam Raimi didn't want to put venom in the movie. He had a whole different approach that he wanted to do, but the studio forced them. He wanted to do vulture. Vulture. Yeah. Yeah. It's just, yeah, it's just a mess because of it. And for people who don't report on the news or get a chance to interact with actors or filmmakers like I do get the opportunity to sometime, I'm sure that opportunity to see the cast of Avengers Doomsday in person, on stage, in front of you, that's like a once in a lifetime thing where it's like, oh wow. Yeah. Having said that, they only announced two major things at the Marvel Studios panel.

[00:39:03] The rest of it was showing some new footage from Avengers Doomsday, a scene from Spider-Man and Brand New Day, bringing out the cast of those movies to just say hello and whatnot, doing some little promotional bits by having Ryan Reynolds show up in a denim Deadpool outfit and ask a question to Paul Rudd on stage. But the otherwise... Dempool. Sure. But the only things that they really announced as major things were Ryan Gosling is going to star in a new... Because it's denim. And it's Deadpool. Dempool.

[00:39:33] So that way it would be Dempool. That... I was just... It didn't seem like he got it. He just said okay and I didn't know... I wanted to make sure... This is what you're cool with? Like you want to chastise me about the blind bit but this shit you're going to love? Yeah. I hate your haircut. This is so good. I don't want to say anything to ruin it. I don't want to... The only thing that's given me some reservations here is that Sean Levy is the one directing it. And I know you guys like Fall Guy. I like Fall Guy too, but he's not the most imaginative or... I don't know that we said we loved Fall Guy. No, not Love. I think you like Fall Guy. I liked it.

[00:41:00] Yeah, and I like Real Steel which I think is his best movie. Otherwise, you know, Deadpool and Wolverine, we all had fun with it. I like Night at the Museum a lot. I think Night at the Museum is a lot of fun. It is. It's fine. It is. No, it's fun. There's something about him where I feel like he's a very generic filmmaker. Yeah, sure. I can see that. You're going to get a lot of point by point stuff. Yeah, exactly. And so I'm glad that, you know, him and Ryan probably had a good time working on Star Wars Starfighter. And this is their next thing that they want to do together, which is cool.

[00:41:29] I know you didn't like Deadpool and Wolverine, but I did. No, no. I did like Deadpool. I saw Deadpool and Wolverine three times in theaters. Okay, then. Well... And it's very fun to watch, but it's also a script that is paper thin and like it's not necessarily doing a lot narratively. Okay, so if you go and see Ghost Rider three times, it's fine. I didn't say it was bad. Yeah, I'm just saying like it. I don't understand what your critique of Sean Levy is.

[00:41:55] My critique of Sean Levy as a filmmaker is what I just said is he's a very generic filmmaker. There's nothing... I couldn't look at a movie and be like, oh, that's a Sean Levy movie. Like he doesn't have like any trademarks or anything like that. He tried and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It feels like he's always... It sounds like a bad thing when you say it. It feels like he's always just trying to make a movie that's just good enough. Like it's just like... Yeah, people will like this. It won't be super memorable, but you'll have some fun while you're watching it.

[00:42:26] How much of that is up to him as the director? A lot of it. I think Free Guy... He's got his own production company. Free Guy was very good. I thought Free Guy was creative. I loved Free Guy. You literally just said we didn't love Free Guy. I liked it. No, you said Fall Guy. Did I say Fall Guy? Yeah. I was talking about Free Guy. Oh, I love Free Guy. Oh, I love Fall Guy. You said Fall Guy. Oh, I meant Free Guy. Yeah, so I was like, oh, he must have directed Fall Guy. I don't know. No, Sean Levy directed Free Guy. Cool. I just... I don't know.

[00:42:54] I would have much rather seen a more visionary director, for lack of a better term, take on something like Ghost Rider to give it a proper thing. I don't trust Sean Levy to do something, especially because Ghost Rider is a darker character. See, I think that I'll push back there because I think from the Marvel properties, I think the ones that are kind of putting it down the middle don't get into as much trouble with like Sam Raimi, again, with Multiverse of Madness. Sure.

[00:43:21] He got to do what he kind of wanted it to do, but it wasn't full on Sam Raimi at all. No. It was hints of that, and it was kind of messy. Yeah. And it didn't really work as well as it should have. And that's a guy who you would want to be able to make creative choices, but I don't know that you hire a director like that again because Marvel won't let you make the right... Sure. So all you're going to do is a watered down Wes Anderson or a watered down Edgar Wright or a watered down... Yeah. And that's not... It's just going to be bad for everybody. Sure. So a Sean Levy hire isn't necessarily a bad thing to me because it's going to be a serviceable guy that's going to get the job done and I'm probably going to enjoy the movie.

[00:43:51] Sean Levy also made The Adam Project to give you another pretty much difference. Yeah, exactly. They're fine. They're fine, exactly. That's the thing. That's what I'm saying. They're fine to good though. They're fine to good. They're not bad. I'm just saying at this point in Marvel's trajectory, I wish that they would get a filmmaker that might get me excited about something. I don't know why would a filmmaker though want to do Marvel? No, you're 100% right there too. Yeah, I don't disagree with that at all. There's definitely a little bit of bad juju around Marvel right now. They're still, no matter what, selling tickets, right? Yeah.

[00:44:19] So they want a director that's going to sell the most tickets. No, they're not selling tickets for some of them. Well, for some of them, but Doomsday is very much on track to be a massive hit. I told you a billion. Oh yeah. Well, I mean for sure. But it's just... I think that you guys all pushed back on me when I said a billion like two episodes ago. I said it could be just under a billion. Play the... This is why I wish we could fucking play the tape. Because I swear to goodness he said... Like I said... I said it could be just under a billion. And then no, but I just said a billion this time. Yeah, definitely. Easy. Easy.

[00:44:50] So you change your opinion in two weeks. In two weeks, you change your opinion. Would you prefer I not? I wish you to admit it and say like... Why is wrong? [00:45:16] Apparently Ryan Gosling was the one who had like the passion for doing Ghost Rider and even had an idea of what comic arc he wanted to do for the movie and Kevin Feige liked that approach. So if Ryan is passionate about it, that excites me. Yeah, that could be a game changer too. Yeah, so I would love to see that. Yeah, that's not just somebody taking it because they want to make money. That's a Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool. They want to be there. Right, exactly. So that's the one thing that maybe they can pull something off. Sure, and I hope they do. I would love that to happen.

[00:45:45] The other major thing that they announced is Black Panther 3 will be coming in October of 2028 and there will be a new Black Panther. As of right now, Letitia Wright is still Shuri, who is the replacement Black Panther for Chadwick Bozeman after his passing. We don't know what's going to happen narratively with that except we do know that the new Black Panther will be played by David Johnson, who you might have seen in The Long Walk or Alien Romulus. Fantastic as the android in that.

[00:46:13] He also has a great movie that really kind of like helped his career take off called Rye Lane, which is a really lovely indie romantic comedy that's kind of in the same vein as like a before sunrise, but a little bit funnier. That's on Hulu and you should check that out because he's fantastic in that as well. It's really good casting. A lot of people were thinking that it was going to be Damsin Idris, who's the co-lead in F1 alongside Brad Pitt. Yeah, yeah. And so everyone was kind of surprised when they announced David Johnson as the new Black Panther.

[00:46:43] And had the other guy from F1 been in true talks? Yeah, he was. So Marvel had talked to him and was in the running for it. Yeah, and it was rumored that he was the favorite. Gosh, that's got to be crushed. I mean, that's one you remember that you didn't get. Oh, absolutely. But yeah, he's going to be playing young T'Challa, the son of Chadwick Boseman's character, T'Challa. And the one thing that they kind of have to explain from that is because at the end of Wakanda Forever, which is pretty close to quote unquote present day in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is young T'Challa was still a child.

[00:47:12] So unless they're jumping ahead in time or we're going to get a T'Challa son from another Marvel Universe, then they have something explained to him. David Johnson's almost 33 years old. Yeah, exactly. So this is not going to be like a teenage T'Challa situation. Teen-challa. Teen-challa. But I'm very excited. I think he's a fantastic actor and I'm really interested to see what he does. On the next episode of Teen-challa. Dad, have you seen my backpack?

Otherwise, the rest of the panel was just Doomsday and Spider-Man stuff and just like the little fun things. So it felt kind of underwhelming. A lot of people... Anything else from Comic-Con that just has nothing to do with Marvel that was a movie related? I didn't really hear anything. Because this wasn't D223 or whatever. No, no.

[00:48:11] This was the official San Diego Comic-Con. So like nothing? And that kind of shows you that Comic-Con has kind of trailed off a little bit as far as... So nothing from DC? No, Warner Brothers was not there this year. So they didn't have a break patient agent. So they just don't... It's just not a thing anymore that kind of... Well, and so Warner Brothers usually does have their own separate little thing too. I think those big studios are doing their own kind of thing. Yeah. Well, they have started... And during COVID is what killed it. Well, that, but also honestly... Well, let's start... Comic-Con kind of got a little too big for its britches after a while. Yeah.

[00:48:39] And it didn't have the same appeal that it did maybe during like the sweet spot of like the 2010 through maybe like 2017. And it kind of started to trail off a little bit. And studios weren't interested in spending as much money as it took to actually get a big presence at Comic-Con because they weren't seeing the return on their investment. Sure. But TV stuff has really thrived at Comic-Con over the years. And that's where like the fandom feels strongest. But Marvel didn't do any TV stuff. No, I think they're saving a lot of their TV stuff for D23. They'll probably announce some stuff.

[00:49:09] There's a part of me that also wonders if they're holding back on announcing a lot of new stuff because Secret Wars, once it's over, will probably give them a bit of a refresh as far as what they're going to do forward with... It makes sense. Yeah. It's probably the best move for them, honestly. And similarly, a lot of people were expecting a big X-Men announcement at this year's Comic-Con, at least announcing the cast of X-Men. However, there is a very specific reason why that they were likely waiting until D23 to

[00:49:38] announce an X-Men cast, even if they're ready to go. And we'll talk about that sometime in the near future when more information comes out about it because I don't want to spoil anything for anybody who might not be privy. I can't believe they didn't talk about the Star Wars Marvel crossover. What's it called? Mandalorian and Gro Groot. What? The Mandalorian and Gro Groot. Gro Groot? Yeah. Instead of Gro Gro. How long were you sitting on that one, Polly Pocket? About 30 seconds. But he needed to get it out, though. It was when you were talking about the series.

They were already working on a Dungeon Crawler Carl adaptation of the books for a TV series. Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door Productions is producing it. It's a thing that's on the way. It is a pinball machine, as well. Yeah, there's a pinball machine. It's big right now. There's merch all over the place. It's a virtual table, Brad. Oh, is it? It is a virtual table. It'll still be cool, though. I'll play it. Anyway, books are huge right now.

[00:51:08] TV series is on the way. They haven't announced who's playing Carl yet, but they did announce that Jeff Hayes, who is the incredible narrator of the Audible books. Fucking phenomenal voice actor. He makes the book so fun to listen to. The voices he does for all the characters are great. And they bring him in to voice Princess Donut, which is a character who is a cat that becomes sentient in the game, in the book, and talks like an uppity British woman. Okay.

[00:51:37] And he's very funny as Princess Donut in the books, and the fact that they're letting him do that character is pretty fun for the show. That's great. Yeah. Anyway, that's it.
