Episode 202 - Nate vs Ben-ator (and Brad)

Ben, Brad, and Nate are fighting. Well, not the whole time, but let's just say that someone still didn't watch their assigned movie from a few weeks ago, and surprisingly, it wasn't Ben. That unnamed criminal goes on a rant that takes up some runtime, but both he and his accusers want you to make sure you heard it all. Ben talks about movies like Sympathy for the Devil and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Brad caught American Fiction and The Zone of Interest, as well as Marvel's Echo and Peacock's Ted series. Nate didn't watch Looper (whoops!) but somehow made time for other movies. No trailers because there's serious business to discuss. Buckle down and listen up!

[00:00:00] Hey everybody, Hey everybody, Hey everybody, Go Flix Yourself

[00:00:17] Hey everybody, it's another episode of Go Flix Yourself.

[00:00:19] My name is Ben Conowitz.

[00:00:21] With me as always is the Midley Vanilli to my Eminem.

[00:00:24] Did you say Midley Vanilli?

[00:00:26] Midley Vanilli.

[00:00:27] Midley Vanilli.

[00:00:28] Midley Vanilli.

[00:00:29] Okay, I mean you can't see right now but I'm lip syncing.

[00:00:33] Lip talking.

[00:00:35] And to my left we're gonna say that this gentleman is the Mark Wahlberg.

[00:00:41] When he was Marky Mark.

[00:00:43] Oh and the funky bunch.

[00:00:44] Eminem.

[00:00:45] I don't like certain people.

[00:00:46] You love wearing tidy whiteies and baggy pants.

[00:00:50] Listen, don't blame him if I look like that when you know when he was wearing those Calvin

[00:00:53] Klein stuff.

[00:00:54] Ooh, look good.

[00:00:55] He looked good.

[00:00:56] Ooh.

[00:00:57] Also didn't he blind a guy?

[00:00:58] Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

[00:00:59] Then like certain people.

[00:01:00] Yeah.

[00:01:01] I don't know if that was before Marky Mark or if it was during Marky Mark.

[00:01:05] Pretty wild, wild like 16 or 17 year old.

[00:01:07] When he was a teenager he did some horrible things and actually physically hurt somebody

[00:01:11] for a long term but he's a very well celebrated actor.

[00:01:13] We shall all just forgive him.

[00:01:14] Well, I'm not sure about that.

[00:01:17] We shouldn't forgive him?

[00:01:19] Well, I don't know.

[00:01:20] I mean you're the Mel Gibson fan here.

[00:01:22] Oh, how dare you.

[00:01:24] Hey guys, welcome to Go Flix Yourself.

[00:01:26] Good to see you.

[00:01:27] Good to see you guys.

[00:01:28] Second episode of the new year.

[00:01:29] Yeah, it's a movie podcast.

[00:01:31] In case you didn't know we love talking about movies.

[00:01:33] We talk about the last movies we saw.

[00:01:35] We assign movies to each other to watch.

[00:01:37] We talk about some movie trailers.

[00:01:39] Well, we talk about movie trailers Brad.

[00:01:41] That's a great point.

[00:01:42] And tonight we didn't.

[00:01:43] We talked about a series.

[00:01:44] Well, we haven't talked about anything.

[00:01:45] Well, that was strict.

[00:01:46] I was strict.

[00:01:47] Oh yeah, because this is the first time we've ever watched a trailer for a TV series.

[00:01:49] This is a TV podcast.

[00:01:50] No, but normally you tell me like hey, this is how this relates to a movie.

[00:01:54] That's why I'm like.

[00:01:55] You tell me if you're watching a TV series trailer, it's not a movie trailer but this

[00:01:59] time you put the work off of it and I didn't know it was a trailer.

[00:02:03] Is this a terrible air carpet?

[00:02:04] No, it's a great Ben Connellist.

[00:02:06] That doesn't sound like that.

[00:02:09] I don't know Nate was accurate.

[00:02:11] It was very good.

[00:02:14] Son of a bitch.

[00:02:15] Oh my goodness.

[00:02:17] Well, love it.

[00:02:18] What's the stupid spin so cold here?

[00:02:21] It is.

[00:02:22] I don't know where you guys are but it is like negative.

[00:02:24] It's the wind.

[00:02:25] 250 degrees here in Northwest Indiana where we record is tonight as we are recording

[00:02:30] negative 25.

[00:02:31] You said because I saw you Ben of course.

[00:02:34] I don't know if you know this Ben's uniform for everyday life is a t-shirt and shorts.

[00:02:39] Yes.

[00:02:40] And it is negative 40 and you're still wearing a t-shirt and shorts outside.

[00:02:43] I did wear, I went through the arcade.

[00:02:45] I own an arcade with my partner Ryan Hart.

[00:02:47] He's a great person.

[00:02:48] Your life partner?

[00:02:49] My life partner.

[00:02:50] So I went through the arcade tonight checking out a couple things to play some pinball

[00:02:53] and I wore a black t-shirt, shorts and flip flops and it was negative 25 out.

[00:02:58] Yeah.

[00:02:59] Now I will clarify.

[00:03:00] But your nostrils literally froze while you were talking.

[00:03:03] It was a very weird sensation but I will tell you if you're listening maybe Mitch and you've

[00:03:10] never experienced negative 25 here's a couple things that happen immediately.

[00:03:14] You walk outside and your extremities start to get feel pain within about 30 seconds.

[00:03:20] So you really can only be outside exposed for about 30 seconds before things really

[00:03:25] start to hurt.

[00:03:26] But also when you get back inside and warm up let's say you walk into a very warm

[00:03:30] everything and it hurts tremendously more.

[00:03:32] It still hurts.

[00:03:33] You need it to be a very easy transition but no I've always worn, you know, I'm a space

[00:03:39] heater of a person.

[00:03:40] And he rarely wears jeans.

[00:03:41] Do you know what also happens?

[00:03:43] I noticed when it is negative 25 out your nipples got really hard.

[00:03:47] Well his nipples are almost always hard.

[00:03:49] I would say like the room temperature my nipples get pretty hard because you know what they're

[00:03:52] sensitive.

[00:03:53] I'm not going to lie.

[00:03:54] His nipples basically go from being able to cut glass to being able to cut

[00:03:59] diamonds.

[00:04:00] Right now I just reached their heart.

[00:04:02] They are right now of course there because I'm here.

[00:04:05] Well yeah it's because I'm recording the show my favorite part of the week.

[00:04:08] That's because that basements like a fucking igloo.

[00:04:10] Okay, this is not a basement.

[00:04:11] This is our studio.

[00:04:12] This is our podcast studio.

[00:04:13] This is a real podcast.

[00:04:16] This is a real podcast.

[00:04:17] Come on your goddamn studio.

[00:04:19] You shit it all the time.

[00:04:21] I built this for the show and you constantly do it.

[00:04:25] If this was a basement would we have an airbud poster up there?

[00:04:29] No, this is a freaking studio.

[00:04:31] What's behind you Nate?

[00:04:33] It's a curtain.

[00:04:34] It's a curtain.

[00:04:35] What kind of curtain?

[00:04:36] A studio curtain.

[00:04:37] Oh interesting.

[00:04:38] Yeah.

[00:04:39] Fuck you.

[00:04:40] Anyway what's your dumb fucking sponsor?

[00:04:43] Do we have a sponsor or are we out of sponsors?

[00:04:45] Are we out of sponsors?

[00:04:46] Are you kidding me there's fucking new snacks every day.

[00:04:48] If you know this because you follow Brad's junk on Instagram.

[00:04:52] That's at look at Brad's junk on Instagram and you know.

[00:04:56] By the way it is amazing how many people you have that follow that.

[00:04:58] It is ridiculous.

[00:04:59] How many followers do you have right now?

[00:05:00] I just passed 14.3 thousand.

[00:05:03] It is ridiculous.

[00:05:04] I don't love the .3 there.

[00:05:06] So that's how Instagram does it.

[00:05:08] No, no, no.

[00:05:09] You can just say about 14.

[00:05:11] That means that you logged in before you got here.

[00:05:14] You checked that.

[00:05:15] I gotta keep track of my followers baby.

[00:05:17] What?

[00:05:18] My followers baby.

[00:05:19] Okay.

[00:05:20] No it was like Christopher Walken almost.

[00:05:23] I gotta keep track of my followers baby.

[00:05:25] You know you gotta watch on Instagram because the snacks are top notch.

[00:05:30] That's not bad.

[00:05:31] That's not bad.

[00:05:32] Two years, two years right now.

[00:05:35] Do it fast.

[00:05:36] Hey, having a good time.

[00:05:39] Oh, Christopher Walken.

[00:05:40] Yeah way better.

[00:05:41] Good job.

[00:05:42] So much better than Brad.

[00:05:43] You're working as you go aren't you?

[00:05:45] Yeah I can even remember what Christopher Walken sounds like.

[00:05:48] I really don't.

[00:05:49] Yeah fucking asshole.

[00:05:50] I'm walking here.

[00:05:51] That's what?

[00:05:52] That's like typical New York.

[00:05:54] Like audition like you're going to be in a New York play.

[00:05:56] That's his favorite.

[00:05:57] Hey I'm walking here.

[00:05:59] That's what I was.

[00:06:00] Oh he comes into a room.

[00:06:01] He's like hey I'm Christian walking here.

[00:06:03] Hey there's dices here.

[00:06:05] Little Miss Muffin.

[00:06:07] Oh fuck yourself.

[00:06:10] Anyway, what is the you know tremendous sponsor that we have?

[00:06:15] The person that wrote the check is Ben.

[00:06:17] Let me ask you something.

[00:06:19] Nate never tires of the joke.

[00:06:21] I have been tired.

[00:06:23] Brad let me just tell you I'm no longer from now on.

[00:06:26] I'm never going to make fun of this little stupid.

[00:06:29] I'm not going to do it.

[00:06:31] I will just let you know that just for me to you, Nate.

[00:06:35] I've been tired of this since 2014 maybe 20 like for like years.

[00:06:43] It's been I don't think we've been in the podcast since 24.

[00:06:46] It's been I don't care.

[00:06:47] It's been exhausting since you've done it the first time.

[00:06:50] Very first time.

[00:06:52] I'm memory and I'm like okay.

[00:06:54] Hey Ben.

[00:06:55] And I say it's like I hope this bit doesn't stick.

[00:06:58] And here we are 201 episodes later and fucking there it is again.

[00:07:02] You can't come up with any other way to go.

[00:07:04] Lazy.

[00:07:06] Jesus Christ.

[00:07:10] What's your relationship like?

[00:07:12] Who is this for?

[00:07:13] What's your relationship like?

[00:07:14] At this point though who is this for the six people that

[00:07:16] actually like you that listens Alex Pappas Mitch.

[00:07:19] Fun some fucking reason loves you.

[00:07:21] And like you know John Cessna and Charlie maybe Luke.

[00:07:25] I don't even I got to ask Luke if he likes this Mike Flores maybe who is

[00:07:28] this for what's your relationship like with Hello Kitty.

[00:07:31] I don't have one currently why why really happened when we didn't

[00:07:36] use to have one.

[00:07:37] What do you mean?

[00:07:38] Did you guys have a falling out?

[00:07:39] Yeah, like who did she hurt you such a false cheat on Hello Kitty.

[00:07:44] What happened?

[00:07:45] I said goodbye kitty.

[00:07:46] Well sometimes you just got to know your boundaries.

[00:07:49] What are you doing?

[00:07:50] Well, you know what's funny is that don't look over here.

[00:07:53] We were talking a little bit before the show.

[00:08:06] We catch up most most time.

[00:08:08] I mean this most times like 90% of the time he leaves the

[00:08:11] sponsor out on the table and as I'm just walking by he goes

[00:08:15] hey keep it in your fucking bag if you don't bring a bag over

[00:08:21] on the table and you don't look at you put it in the most obvious

[00:08:24] spot and you're mad at us for looking at it that you left

[00:08:27] right in front of us.

[00:08:28] You know, you don't have to look at everything like label

[00:08:30] facing out.

[00:08:31] It's almost like he's trying to get us to look and then

[00:08:34] he gets mad and then it gets really mad.

[00:08:36] Yeah, don't look at it.

[00:08:37] But but literally I looked at you and you were mad at me

[00:08:40] because no you were looking at the bag.

[00:08:41] I saw your eyes.

[00:08:42] But you're talking about it.

[00:08:43] My eyes are up here.

[00:08:44] My eyes are up here.

[00:08:45] Stop looking at my snacks.

[00:08:46] But you weren't getting ready to talk about it.

[00:08:47] I thought that it was okay at that point.

[00:08:49] You're talking about the sponsor to look at the sponsor.

[00:08:51] It doesn't matter.

[00:08:52] You're going to see it.

[00:08:53] What time are we at?

[00:08:54] Is it an hour?

[00:08:55] Okay, so what's really fun about this actually is that

[00:08:57] No, I'm not.

[00:08:58] I'm fun.

[00:08:59] This is the third episode in a row where I have brought a

[00:09:01] Goldfish.

[00:09:02] Yeah, exactly.

[00:09:03] I can see the package.

[00:09:04] Yeah, you can see it.

[00:09:05] Everyone knows Goldfish package when you see it.

[00:09:06] You spot it from a mile away.

[00:09:07] It's like seeing a Pringles can.

[00:09:08] You know what that is.

[00:09:09] Have you guys ever tried the ketchup Pringles?

[00:09:11] You know what happened.

[00:09:12] Yeah, we know.

[00:09:13] You know.

[00:09:14] All right anyway, it's a new Goldfish.

[00:09:15] That's all I'm going to say.

[00:09:16] Don't look at the flavor on the front.

[00:09:18] Just know that it is a new flavor.

[00:09:20] And we're going to try them out here.

[00:09:22] No, just grab the bag.

[00:09:23] The front is facing me.

[00:09:24] So.

[00:09:25] Not allowed to look.

[00:09:26] No, look at the front of the bag.

[00:09:29] Just give Nate some Goldfish snackaroos.

[00:09:32] And don't look at the front of the bag.

[00:09:35] Mmm.

[00:09:36] Mmm.

[00:09:37] Mmm.

[00:09:38] Fuck.

[00:09:39] Can I eat them yet?

[00:09:41] Yeah, these are real fucks good.

[00:09:43] Like graham crackers?

[00:09:44] Mmm.

[00:09:45] Don't chew in the mic.

[00:09:47] These are good.

[00:09:48] These are real good.

[00:09:49] Don't chew in the mic.

[00:09:50] I'm sorry guys.

[00:09:52] He does this.

[00:09:53] I can't say.

[00:09:54] Hey, I don't think you tried them yet, did you?

[00:09:55] They did at three.

[00:09:56] You did.

[00:09:57] Graham crackers.

[00:09:58] Wow, these are great.

[00:09:59] Yeah, these are.

[00:10:00] I'm not used to the non-cheese Goldfish.

[00:10:02] But these are very good.

[00:10:04] This is one of my favorite things I've gotten in a while.

[00:10:06] These actually, you know what they taste like?

[00:10:09] They're like graham crackers with crunch berries on them.

[00:10:12] You're at 100% right.

[00:10:13] Yeah, actually yes.

[00:10:14] And I wouldn't be surprised if that's partially how they got the flavor.

[00:10:16] These are Strawberry Shortcake Goldfish.

[00:10:18] It's a new flavor.

[00:10:19] For some reason Hello Kitty is the sponsor behind them.

[00:10:21] I don't know.

[00:10:22] I don't get the Hello Kitty part.

[00:10:23] I don't know if maybe there's a famous Strawberry Shortcake link to Hello Kitty or what.

[00:10:26] But I believe that these are out right now because it's like Valentine's Day theme

[00:10:29] because it's a red bag and whatnot.

[00:10:31] It's OOPS all Goldfish.

[00:10:33] I would love to have OOPS all Goldfish.

[00:10:35] That's just normal.

[00:10:36] Pour some milk on them.

[00:10:37] Ew.

[00:10:38] You know what I'm saying?

[00:10:39] Yeah, these are really fucking good.

[00:10:41] No, actually those are really good.

[00:10:42] Yeah, these are fantastic.

[00:10:43] Nate, you're right.

[00:10:44] They do taste like the aftertaste is crunch berries.

[00:10:47] It'd be like if you-

[00:10:48] It's graham cracker forward.

[00:10:50] It leaves you with a residual of a cranberry.

[00:10:53] My mouth isn't bleeding though.

[00:10:55] The top of my roof is intact.

[00:10:57] If you sprinkled crunch berry dust on graham crackers, this is what you do.

[00:11:01] I really like that.

[00:11:02] You haven't brought a bad snack in a long time.

[00:11:04] Oh, that's good.

[00:11:05] Don't- don't why.

[00:11:07] Sometimes it's gonna be like-

[00:11:08] Oh, there's puke flavored nachos.

[00:11:11] The brats people are at it again.

[00:11:13] Some pickle gummies.

[00:11:14] Yeah.

[00:11:15] I would never bring pickle gummies.

[00:11:16] Hey Brad.

[00:11:17] Yeah?

[00:11:18] What's the last movie you saw, buddy?

[00:11:19] Hey Brad?

[00:11:20] Yeah.

[00:11:21] Hey Brad!

[00:11:22] Brad, Brad.

[00:11:23] What's the last movie you saw, buddy?

[00:11:24] The last movie I saw was Heartburn, which is a 1986 movie directed by Mike Nichols

[00:11:31] who also directed The Graduate.

[00:11:33] And it's written by Nora Ephron based on the novel that she wrote.

[00:11:37] Nora Ephron being the writer of When Harry Met Sally and Sleep is in Seattle

[00:11:42] and you've got Mayo, the latter of two which she also directed.

[00:11:44] And she's written a lot of-

[00:11:46] Romantic comedies.

[00:11:47] Yeah, and like novels too, right?

[00:11:49] Famously.

[00:11:50] Yes, yeah, very famous writers.

[00:11:51] Romcom, oh my god.

[00:11:53] I'm just now.

[00:11:55] Holy shit.

[00:11:56] Are you serious?

[00:11:57] No, he's not serious.

[00:11:58] Fucking crazy.

[00:11:59] You- I don't know if you're joking.

[00:12:02] He's joking.

[00:12:03] Oh my god.

[00:12:04] He's an idiot.

[00:12:05] Romcom.

[00:12:06] What the fuck?

[00:12:07] That's awesome.

[00:12:08] Anyway, because it-

[00:12:09] What the fuck?

[00:12:12] That's awesome.

[00:12:13] I love-

[00:12:14] Wait till he learns-

[00:12:15] We took two long words and shortened them into one word.

[00:12:18] Wait until he learns about sci-fi.

[00:12:19] What do you mean?

[00:12:20] I don't know.

[00:12:21] Oh my god!

[00:12:22] Oh my god!

[00:12:23] So it starts with Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson

[00:12:29] and it's the story of how these two people fall in love

[00:12:32] and get married and have kids and whatnot.

[00:12:34] But it's a very grounded down-to-earth kind of practical approach to it.

[00:12:40] It doesn't have the same romantic comedy feel as it does

[00:12:43] that her other movies do, which is partially why I think

[00:12:46] ended up getting fairly panned by critics.

[00:12:49] The interesting thing is, is the book that she wrote,

[00:12:52] the story is, is actually inspired by the relationship

[00:12:56] that she had with Carl Bernstein, one half of Ward Wood and Bernstein,

[00:12:59] the two reporters who cracked the deep throat story about Nixon

[00:13:03] that's depicted in all the president's men.

[00:13:05] She was married to Carl Bernstein for a while.

[00:13:07] He cheated on her while she was pregnant with their second kid

[00:13:10] and this movie-

[00:13:11] Oh that's a great guy.

[00:13:12] This movie follows that trajectory.

[00:13:15] And so it's a little bit more of like a-

[00:13:19] It's just not as upbeat, you know, or as like fun

[00:13:23] or funny as other movies.

[00:13:24] And I wonder if that's kind of why people didn't dig it as much.

[00:13:27] You know, signing up for one thing, getting together.

[00:13:29] Yeah, but the performances are really good at Meryl Streep.

[00:13:32] Of course you can't go wrong with Meryl Streep.

[00:13:33] Jack Nicholson is good in it as well.

[00:13:36] But yeah, it's-

[00:13:37] Stockard Jamies in it.

[00:13:38] I like Stockard Jamies.

[00:13:39] Yeah, she's very good.

[00:13:40] Rizzo.

[00:13:41] And so, yeah, it's a-

[00:13:43] I was kind of surprised because I didn't realize

[00:13:46] that it was a Nora Ephron script when I was watching

[00:13:49] and I looked it up and was like, oh yeah, that.

[00:13:51] And it just feels a little bit more subdued.

[00:13:55] And honestly, I wonder if that's kind of like

[00:13:57] what attracted Mike Nichols to it is it's kind of-

[00:14:00] It's the kind of romantic comedy that you would expect

[00:14:03] a director like Mike Nichols, how you would expect him

[00:14:05] to tell a romantic comedy.

[00:14:06] Yeah, talk a little bit about Mike Nichols

[00:14:08] and what else he's done that maybe listeners would know.

[00:14:10] Yeah, so I mean the most famous thing that he did

[00:14:12] was The Graduate obviously.

[00:14:13] And that's, you know, like a-

[00:14:14] That was a super-

[00:14:15] That was an Oscar winner.

[00:14:17] And it's kind of like one of the definitive

[00:14:19] movies of that generation.

[00:14:21] He also did another one of my favorite films

[00:14:23] from the 90s, The Birdcage.

[00:14:24] Yes, The Birdcage is also a fantastic movie.

[00:14:27] But yeah, he was a very famous director

[00:14:30] and he also has a history in improv too.

[00:14:32] He was part of a famous duo, Mike Nichols

[00:14:35] and Elaine May were very famous.

[00:14:37] Oh, Nichols and May.

[00:14:38] I didn't know that was-

[00:14:39] It's Mike Nichols?

[00:14:40] I didn't know that.

[00:14:41] Okay.

[00:14:42] In this film though, Brad, in Heartburn,

[00:14:44] there is one of Ben's favorite actors.

[00:14:47] Oh yes.

[00:14:48] Sam Malta makes his debut in this.

[00:14:50] I was surprised.

[00:14:51] Yeah, I saw it and I was like,

[00:14:52] oh, I can't wait to tell Ben.

[00:14:53] Who is it, Ben?

[00:14:55] What are my favorite actors of all time?

[00:14:56] Uh-huh.

[00:14:57] Is it Emile Hirsch?

[00:15:00] No.

[00:15:01] Is it Jai Courtney?

[00:15:02] No.

[00:15:03] No.

[00:15:04] Jai Courtney?

[00:15:05] Sam Worthington?

[00:15:06] No.

[00:15:07] These are all great boring choices though.

[00:15:08] No, those are the people I hate.

[00:15:09] No, this is something you genuinely love.

[00:15:10] You're talking about Malta.

[00:15:11] Oh, yeah, yeah.

[00:15:12] I would say you probably admire his lifestyle.

[00:15:14] Yeah.

[00:15:15] I mean it's like one of the things where you're like

[00:15:17] on your vision board in your bedroom,

[00:15:19] I've seen his picture up there.

[00:15:20] Yeah.

[00:15:21] Tyler Perry?

[00:15:23] Kevin Spacey!

[00:15:25] That's such an asshole.

[00:15:27] Yeah, no, I actually looked it up because he does

[00:15:29] have a small role in this.

[00:15:30] It's his debut movie.

[00:15:31] Yeah, it was his very first role.

[00:15:33] Which is interesting because I see your...

[00:15:35] What are you...

[00:15:36] Real question, whatever happened to Kevin Spacey?

[00:15:38] I don't want to spoil it.

[00:15:39] Okay, well, you know...

[00:15:41] Natasha Leonson as well.

[00:15:42] The fourth season of House of Cards right now.

[00:15:44] He's doing really good.

[00:15:46] No, she's not.

[00:15:47] Yeah, she is.

[00:15:48] She plays a baby.

[00:15:49] No, she's not.

[00:15:50] She's Rachel's niece.

[00:15:51] Rachel's niece?

[00:15:52] Yeah, she's in a very, very small role.

[00:15:55] Is she a baby?

[00:15:56] Yeah, she must have been four years old.

[00:15:58] So this film was made in 1986 and she was born in...

[00:16:02] In 1969.

[00:16:03] 1979, so yeah, she was probably seven.

[00:16:06] Five versus six.

[00:16:07] Yeah, I'm trying to think of like where...

[00:16:09] Hey, did you...

[00:16:10] Merrill Streep's daughter, Mamie Gummer's in her as well.

[00:16:12] Yeah, her daughter plays her daughter.

[00:16:14] She's a child actress that goes like,

[00:16:16] Hey, I'm from...

[00:16:17] I'm walking here.

[00:16:18] There was a little young girl who was smoking a cigarette.

[00:16:21] Yes, of course.

[00:16:22] Perfect.

[00:16:23] But no, yeah, I didn't even clock her.

[00:16:24] So like she must not be like...

[00:16:26] Let's see if I can put a picture of her in the film because maybe...

[00:16:28] But it sounds like it's at the bottom of the list.

[00:16:31] Wow, Brad, I can't believe you didn't clock a seven-year-old Natasha Leonson.

[00:16:34] I thought you were in the industry.

[00:16:37] I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those things where like it's a background

[00:16:39] role where you don't see her.

[00:16:40] Oh, I'm sure it is a very small role.

[00:16:41] For example, the kid who plays Averman in the Mighty Ducks movies is in Home Alone.

[00:16:46] Yeah, he's in...

[00:16:48] Isn't he the kid that goes through the trucks?

[00:16:51] No, the van?

[00:16:52] No, that's a different actor.

[00:16:54] He plays one of the kids who's in Paris when their family's in Paris.

[00:16:58] He's in the background and you can see him briefly

[00:17:00] and there was apparently a scene where he actually did have a speaking part

[00:17:03] but it got cut but he's still there in the background.

[00:17:06] You just kept bringing up Mighty Ducks, that's why.

[00:17:08] Yeah, and done Mighty Ducks again, I don't think.

[00:17:11] Both in the night? Oh, you're right, Home Alone 90.

[00:17:14] Mighty Ducks, 1992, I think.

[00:17:17] Anyway, what else did you watch?

[00:17:19] I also rewatched The Holdovers.

[00:17:21] My mom hadn't seen it and she wanted to watch it.

[00:17:23] Such a good film.

[00:17:24] Is it even better on the second or third watch?

[00:17:26] Does it hold over?

[00:17:27] No, is it even better on the second or third watch?

[00:17:29] Come on!

[00:17:30] I honestly do think that I liked it better the second time.

[00:17:33] Not that I didn't already love it the first time

[00:17:35] because it was one of my favorite movies of the year.

[00:17:37] I was able to absorb it a lot more and just appreciate a lot more about it.

[00:17:41] Sometimes, I don't know if the studios are paying somebody on X or Twitter

[00:17:48] to get it in my algorithm because it's constantly in my algorithm

[00:17:53] for some reason The Holdovers was.

[00:17:55] I think partially it's because they're promoting and that kind of thing.

[00:17:58] Yeah, so it'd be on the side as trending.

[00:18:01] But oftentimes when I see those things

[00:18:04] it's because a film is not going to do very well.

[00:18:07] And they're trying to...

[00:18:08] But this was worth everything, I thought.

[00:18:11] It's getting a lot of awards attention right now too.

[00:18:13] So I'm sure that's why it's a big part of it.

[00:18:15] Yeah, I rewatched The Holdovers and it definitely holds up.

[00:18:19] Is that it?

[00:18:20] No, I did a double feature in theaters pretty much

[00:18:24] right after we recorded the previous episode

[00:18:26] because I was still doing some catch-up for my proper year-end movies.

[00:18:30] So what did you like better, Barbie or Obinac?

[00:18:33] I saw American Fiction, which is a new movie with Jeffrey Wright in the lead.

[00:18:37] People love this film.

[00:18:38] It is fantastic.

[00:18:40] People are saying.

[00:18:42] People are saying.

[00:18:43] It's almost like if Jeffrey Wright was in a Paul Giamatti-esque role

[00:18:47] that's kind of the character he plays in a way.

[00:18:49] He plays an author who he's not really selling stuff very well

[00:18:54] and he's very frustrated by the state of black literature especially

[00:18:57] because there's a popular book being sold by an author played by Issa Rae

[00:19:01] and he's sick of the idea that black books, black stories and whatnot

[00:19:05] always constantly seem to have to tap into the poverty

[00:19:08] and the drugs and the crime and all stuff

[00:19:10] and he's really frustrated about it.

[00:19:12] And so as like an act of like, okay, well, you know, fuck you.

[00:19:15] He writes this like totally bullshit like novel

[00:19:18] that's like in the same style with like poor grammar

[00:19:21] and like about this guy who's like a thug and everything

[00:19:23] and of course immediately gets a book deal.

[00:19:26] Like everyone wants to buy it and publish it

[00:19:29] and make it a movie deal and all that.

[00:19:31] And he's just like, fuck you.

[00:19:33] So it's very, very funny.

[00:19:35] There's some sharp satire in it.

[00:19:36] Jeffrey Wright is fantastic in it.

[00:19:38] I mean everybody in this movie is really good.

[00:19:39] I feel like Jeffrey Wright, I really love the-

[00:19:41] I don't know.

[00:19:42] Jeffrey Wright can do no wrong.

[00:19:44] Well, but what I love about Jeffrey Wright

[00:19:46] is he has a head of ton of like vehicles

[00:19:48] where he is the main guy.

[00:19:50] No, not at all.

[00:19:51] And he's older.

[00:19:52] He was born in 1965.

[00:19:53] But I love how his career is just kind of simmered up, right?

[00:19:56] A slow rise up.

[00:19:57] He has kind of-

[00:19:58] And well deserved, well deserved.

[00:20:00] Kind of a similar trajectory to that of Paul Giamatti.

[00:20:03] I think that Jeffrey Wright has maybe had

[00:20:07] more note for less period of time

[00:20:09] because I think only maybe in like the past decade

[00:20:11] is maybe when Jeffrey Wright has kind of risen up

[00:20:13] and like people know his name.

[00:20:15] I mean he was-

[00:20:16] I first saw him in Westworld.

[00:20:17] That's where I was exposed to.

[00:20:19] He was in Game Night as like a third detective there, right?

[00:20:23] The movie I talked about last week.

[00:20:25] He's the guy who is supposed to be the fake detective

[00:20:27] who like is introducing the game.

[00:20:29] Yes, yeah.

[00:20:30] But he comes in like three fourths through the film.

[00:20:32] Yeah.

[00:20:33] Has a very small role.

[00:20:34] That's what I'm saying.

[00:20:35] So that's the level of roles in 2018 he was getting.

[00:20:38] Game Night was what?

[00:20:40] 2018?

[00:20:41] Yeah.

[00:20:42] Oh my goodness.

[00:20:43] Yeah, so that's a pretty big resurgence.

[00:20:44] And now it's Commissioner Gordon.

[00:20:45] Yeah.

[00:20:46] But yeah.

[00:20:47] If you can see American fiction,

[00:20:49] I believe it's wide in theaters now.

[00:20:51] It should be everywhere.

[00:20:52] Very funny.

[00:20:53] It also has a great emotional core to it as well.

[00:20:56] The best thing about it is all of the characters feel so rich

[00:21:01] and like you love all the characters in the movie

[00:21:03] despite their flaws.

[00:21:04] Sterling K. Brown is also in it.

[00:21:06] He gives a particularly understated performance.

[00:21:09] That is fantastic.

[00:21:11] But yeah, I loved it.

[00:21:12] Very good.

[00:21:13] Please go out of your way to see it.

[00:21:14] The director of that, Corde Jefferson?

[00:21:15] Yes, he's a newcomer.

[00:21:16] I was just saying he's a newcomer.

[00:21:17] Yeah, this is his first movie.

[00:21:18] First movie was Corde?

[00:21:19] Corde.

[00:21:20] Good for him.

[00:21:21] But good for him.

[00:21:22] Yeah, first movie.

[00:21:23] He's done things in the Hollywood.

[00:21:24] Corde.

[00:21:25] Very strange and wonderful name.

[00:21:27] And then the other thing I saw was The Zone of Interest

[00:21:30] which is the latest movie from Jonathan Glazer

[00:21:32] who has done some peculiar stuff.

[00:21:34] The one that you might have heard of is Under the Skin

[00:21:37] with Scarlett Johansson.

[00:21:38] Very strange sci-fi thriller.

[00:21:41] But yeah, this movie knocked me on my ass.

[00:21:45] It just totally threw me for a loop

[00:21:48] because it is a tough watch.

[00:21:50] It is haunting.

[00:21:51] The movie is about a German family who live in a house.

[00:21:57] The father is the commandant for the Nazis

[00:22:00] and the house is situated right next to Auschwitz.

[00:22:04] And when I say right next to Auschwitz,

[00:22:06] I mean the wall that separates their garden from Auschwitz

[00:22:09] is the only thing that separates their house from Auschwitz.

[00:22:13] And so it follows this German family

[00:22:15] and the thing that is just so...

[00:22:18] It's like a real story.

[00:22:20] Yeah, it's based on a true story.

[00:22:22] And it's the thing that is so hard hitting about it

[00:22:27] and this happens throughout the entire movie too

[00:22:29] is the way that they just so nonchalantly

[00:22:34] and with such mundane depiction

[00:22:38] show this family just living their life like a normal family.

[00:22:43] If this were just like a family drama

[00:22:45] and you were following them doing whatever

[00:22:47] and there's the fucking...

[00:22:49] You hear screams?

[00:22:51] No, literally. Throughout the entire movie you'll hear screams.

[00:22:53] You'll hear muffled gunshots.

[00:22:55] You'll see the glow of the fire burning

[00:23:00] because of the ovens in the gas chambers and everything.

[00:23:03] And it's the entire movie,

[00:23:05] it's just all underlying right there

[00:23:07] while it's focusing on this family.

[00:23:09] And it's just so cold and it takes the heinousness

[00:23:15] and the evil that there is there to another level

[00:23:17] by having such a normal family just living...

[00:23:20] An insane juxtaposition.

[00:23:22] Yeah, just unbelievable.

[00:23:24] It's so well done though.

[00:23:26] I'll never watch it again probably.

[00:23:28] That's fair.

[00:23:30] But yeah man, it's just...

[00:23:32] So feel good movie of the year.

[00:23:34] Yeah, and there's a great ending to it too.

[00:23:36] I won't spoil it because you won't expect

[00:23:38] what happened. It's not like it's a twist or anything like that.

[00:23:41] Well the Nazis lose.

[00:23:43] But it's something that's done that John Ecclidio chose to do

[00:23:46] and the juxtaposition of certain imagery and things like that.

[00:23:50] It was stellar.

[00:23:52] It shot right onto my top ten list after I saw it.

[00:23:56] What's that called again?

[00:23:58] The zone of interest.

[00:24:00] Tough. You didn't even heard of this.

[00:24:02] Yeah, it's just now getting a limited release.

[00:24:04] Where did you hear about this?

[00:24:06] Yeah, I mean it had been getting awards buzz and I heard that was very good.

[00:24:10] Thankfully it was one of those movies where I was able to stay in the dark

[00:24:13] about it quite a bit where I knew that it had something to do with Nazis

[00:24:16] but I didn't really know what the plot or anything like that.

[00:24:19] And honestly the movie doesn't even really have a plot per se.

[00:24:23] That's the thing is you're just watching this family...

[00:24:26] Their life unfold with the backdrop being something so horrific.

[00:24:30] Yeah, but yeah, it was...

[00:24:33] Did you have to pause it at all?

[00:24:35] Was it that tough to watch?

[00:24:37] I saw it in theater.

[00:24:39] So you paused it at all?

[00:24:41] You tried that.

[00:24:43] Hey, can I pause this?

[00:24:45] Did you raise your hand?

[00:24:47] Yeah, but not at an angle.

[00:24:49] Dumb joke.

[00:24:51] So yeah, zone of interest.

[00:24:53] Don't check it out.

[00:24:55] Take my word for it, vote for it for all the awards.

[00:24:57] You don't need to see it, just know that it's amazing.

[00:24:59] Yeah, it's very, very good.

[00:25:01] What was it?

[00:25:03] It's a double feature, right?

[00:25:05] Yeah, American fiction.

[00:25:07] I also watched some TV.

[00:25:09] Nope.

[00:25:11] Where'd you watch?

[00:25:13] No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

[00:25:15] We're already over.

[00:25:17] Over what?

[00:25:19] Over time, we're at hour and ten right now.

[00:25:21] Well guess what?

[00:25:23] The two shows I watched are actually tied to movies.

[00:25:25] Middle fingers in the air just don't care.

[00:25:27] Not at me though.

[00:25:29] I watched so many movies and guess what?

[00:25:31] I did watch them.

[00:25:33] It is surprisingly very good.

[00:25:35] The last couple they've done have not been great.

[00:25:37] It's surprisingly very good.

[00:25:39] I like her, I don't know her at all but I like her.

[00:25:41] Yeah, it doesn't quite feel like a necessary piece of storytelling

[00:25:43] and that's partially the point because

[00:25:45] it's the first series in what Marvel's calling

[00:25:47] their Marvel Spotlight series

[00:25:49] and they're going to use that label

[00:25:51] for shows where you don't need to have seen

[00:25:53] a bunch of stuff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

[00:25:55] You can kind of just watch it and not really need to understand.

[00:25:57] This one, it feels a little bit muddled at first

[00:25:59] because the first episode they have to do some recapping

[00:26:01] since the character debuted in Hawkeye.

[00:26:03] Which I didn't dislike Hawkeye.

[00:26:05] Yeah and they do a pretty decent job of

[00:26:07] giving you an idea of who the character is

[00:26:09] because the whole first episode basically provides her origin,

[00:26:11] shows some of the Hawkeye stuff,

[00:26:13] fills in the gaps and then expands into

[00:26:15] the story that ties to her family

[00:26:17] and also her Choctaw Nation origin

[00:26:19] because she's the character is

[00:26:21] of the Choctaw people

[00:26:23] and that's actually one of the best things

[00:26:25] about the story and makes

[00:26:27] the enhances the character who's in the comics

[00:26:29] because they make

[00:26:31] her Choctaw background

[00:26:33] such an integral part of the character

[00:26:35] and the family dynamic

[00:26:37] that she has, that's what makes

[00:26:39] the story really shine.

[00:26:41] And so it's only five episodes

[00:26:43] and the way that the narrative

[00:26:45] is structured, especially the first three episodes

[00:26:47] the way it lays out

[00:26:49] it's done in a really clever way where once you get to the final episode

[00:26:51] and it ties certain things together

[00:26:53] it's really well done.

[00:26:55] You can't wait to see it.

[00:26:57] I think you'll end up, you would like it a lot if you watch it

[00:26:59] so yeah, I think it's worth seeing.

[00:27:01] And then I watched

[00:27:03] Ted which is the new Peacock series

[00:27:05] that is the prequel

[00:27:07] adaptation of the Ted movies that Seth McFarland did.

[00:27:09] Yeah, it was funny.

[00:27:11] What did you think? You liked it? I did.

[00:27:13] It is. The episodes are

[00:27:15] a little long. It's sitcom-y.

[00:27:17] They do a good job of translating

[00:27:19] into sitcom but...

[00:27:21] It's like a contemporary edgy version

[00:27:23] of the 90s sitcom in a way.

[00:27:25] No laugh track, it's single camera so it feels just like the movie

[00:27:27] but it's a prequel series

[00:27:29] so it's set, followed by Michael Wahlberg's character

[00:27:31] when he's a teenager

[00:27:33] and he's obviously friends with Ted

[00:27:35] and they go to high school together

[00:27:37] and they discover weed

[00:27:39] and it has all the hallmarks that you would expect

[00:27:41] of Seth McFarland to have.

[00:27:43] It has a little more heart than I was expecting.

[00:27:45] I thought so too.

[00:27:47] And you'll find even in later episodes if you keep watching too.

[00:27:49] Alana Yubak is especially great

[00:27:51] because she's doing this thing where

[00:27:53] she's putting on a voice

[00:27:55] but it's not cartoonish enough to be

[00:27:57] silly but it still gives her

[00:27:59] a funny character dynamic.

[00:28:01] Scott Grimes, on the other hand,

[00:28:03] really got on my nerves because he's always

[00:28:05] fucking yelling.

[00:28:07] When I saw that

[00:28:09] first episode I'm like

[00:28:11] I know that character but

[00:28:13] I can't figure out who it was. I had to look it up.

[00:28:15] Scott Grimes has gotten old.

[00:28:17] Yeah, he has.

[00:28:19] I get what they're doing here because

[00:28:21] they kind of want to give him

[00:28:23] a Carol Conner vibe

[00:28:25] where he's supposed to be that angry dad

[00:28:27] but it just gets grating after a while

[00:28:29] because it doesn't feel like there's any dynamic to him.

[00:28:31] Also, Scott Grimes is an incredibly talented voice actor.

[00:28:33] Yes.

[00:28:35] But if he picks a voice that is grating

[00:28:37] and goes with it as the character

[00:28:39] that can get...

[00:28:41] It's not even the voice that's grating.

[00:28:43] It's the fact that he's always...

[00:28:45] 90% of his dialogue

[00:28:47] is like,

[00:28:49] I'm fucking Boston father.

[00:28:51] And it just gets old real fast.

[00:28:53] Does it have anything endearing about him

[00:28:55] like the albundies of this world either?

[00:28:57] From the first episode or two that I watched

[00:28:59] there was nothing there that

[00:29:01] made you like him either.

[00:29:03] What streaming services is on?

[00:29:05] It's on Peacock.

[00:29:07] But it's very funny.

[00:29:09] I think it's worth watching.

[00:29:11] I was thoroughly entertained by it.

[00:29:13] There's a lot of really just laugh out loud moments.

[00:29:15] I feel like he kind of restrained himself

[00:29:17] because Ted...

[00:29:19] He was executive producer, director and writer

[00:29:21] of every episode.

[00:29:23] It's totally his.

[00:29:25] And I feel like he kind of restrained himself

[00:29:27] because Ted had a little too many

[00:29:29] family guy-esque elements

[00:29:31] and I think here he

[00:29:33] tried to keep it more contained

[00:29:35] to a proper sitcom as opposed to doing

[00:29:37] some of his family guy jokes.

[00:29:39] There's little hints of it here and there

[00:29:41] but it's not quite as overwhelming as it was

[00:29:43] but Ted Salieri...

[00:29:45] I also thought Ted looked good.

[00:29:47] He looks surprisingly good.

[00:29:49] I thought so too.

[00:29:51] There was never a shot where I was like,

[00:29:53] oh this is a cheap TV version of Ted.

[00:29:55] He looks great throughout the entire series.

[00:29:57] Does that speak to the fact that the movies

[00:29:59] came out years ago and so

[00:30:01] the CGI has changed so much

[00:30:03] that it's cheaper to do it

[00:30:05] even better than it was back then?

[00:30:07] Probably.

[00:30:09] It's probably cost less to do it.

[00:30:11] So Brad says A.I. is good.

[00:30:13] Okay?

[00:30:15] We're gonna get there.

[00:30:17] That's it, that's all I saw.

[00:30:19] Nate, how about you buddy?

[00:30:21] I don't know if we have time to talk about what we talked about.

[00:30:23] Again, we're gonna skip me tonight.

[00:30:25] It's fine. Brad had to talk about two TV shows

[00:30:27] so I watched five movies

[00:30:29] and I really won't talk about any of them

[00:30:31] but Nate, what did you...

[00:30:33] The first thing I saw was a documentary on the Netflix.

[00:30:35] Can I say something real quick?

[00:30:37] I'm sorry to interrupt you, Nate

[00:30:39] I'm gonna just interrupt you real quick.

[00:30:41] So when you say what you watched,

[00:30:43] I'll go thumbs up, thumbs down

[00:30:45] and you'll say one of the... and we'll move on.

[00:30:47] And that's how we'll gain the time back

[00:30:49] that we lost from Brad.

[00:30:51] Yeah, because if there's one thing that's super entertaining on a podcast

[00:30:53] first of all it's hand signals

[00:30:55] and also cutting down on the talking.

[00:30:57] Cutting down on the talking.

[00:30:59] We're already overtime and you chose to talk about two TV shows.

[00:31:01] You don't even know what time we're at.

[00:31:03] 57 minutes.

[00:31:05] 30 minutes.

[00:31:07] Way over.

[00:31:09] I bet you two of the movies you watched

[00:31:11] are probably bandits and farts

[00:31:13] and Predator vs. Nuts.

[00:31:15] Bandits and farts.

[00:31:17] Loki, one of the best films of the year

[00:31:19] and I'm gonna tell you why.

[00:31:21] And now what?

[00:31:23] Predator vs. Nuts?

[00:31:25] He would watch that on a heartbeat.

[00:31:27] I know he would. I bet you've already seen it.

[00:31:29] I wrote it.

[00:31:31] And the thing is it's just been using a Predator action figure

[00:31:33] and just hitting his fucking ball sack

[00:31:35] and just looking at it.

[00:31:37] I'm gonna go back to the movie on Tiktok.

[00:31:39] I do do that.

[00:31:41] Do-do.

[00:31:43] Nate, what did you watch? A documentary?

[00:31:45] I did watch a documentary on the Netflix.

[00:31:47] Gotta finish this joke.

[00:31:49] No, no, no, no.

[00:31:51] No, no, it's your time.

[00:31:53] It was gonna be...

[00:31:55] No, say it.

[00:31:57] That's it.

[00:31:59] That's why I wanted to use the word.

[00:32:02] Nate, back to you.

[00:32:04] From the studio, back to me.

[00:32:06] Back to you.

[00:32:08] I watched a documentary that came out in 2023.

[00:32:10] If you guys remember

[00:32:12] a biographical documentary film

[00:32:14] called American Symphony.

[00:32:16] Have you seen this?

[00:32:18] American Symphony? No, I haven't seen this.

[00:32:20] So this is a film

[00:32:22] about a year in the life of John Bautista.

[00:32:24] Oh, okay.

[00:32:26] Who is the musician...

[00:32:28] Most people know him as a musician

[00:32:30] that led the Stephen Colbert...

[00:32:32] Still does, I think, right? No.

[00:32:34] Who is it now?

[00:32:36] It's one of his guys in his band.

[00:32:38] But he has actually gotten quite a bit of success.

[00:32:40] I didn't realize he left.

[00:32:42] Yeah, but he did leave.

[00:32:44] And so what it ends up though...

[00:32:46] So the documentary sets out

[00:32:48] to follow him

[00:32:50] in a year in the life kind of.

[00:32:52] As I'm a big fan of musical documentaries.

[00:32:54] One of my favorite documentaries

[00:32:56] was down on the Food Fighters.

[00:32:58] And it just kind of shows them through

[00:33:00] Hawkins drug addiction

[00:33:02] and stuff like that.

[00:33:04] And how much they care about each other.

[00:33:06] What's that Food Fighters documentary called?

[00:33:08] I don't know, but I'll tell you afterwards.

[00:33:10] It's called Food for Thought.

[00:33:12] But it's really good.

[00:33:14] It's a great title.

[00:33:16] Brad was so mad and he looked at me like

[00:33:18] I'm not going to give you this.

[00:33:20] It's better than Ben-N-Dur.

[00:33:22] Yeah, it's way better.

[00:33:24] Why do you bring up my failures

[00:33:26] when we can just focus on successes?

[00:33:28] Sounds like you...

[00:33:30] That's what you would do for a campaign for Congress.

[00:33:32] I made it up really quickly, okay?

[00:33:34] They all can't be winners, but sometimes...

[00:33:36] Don't we fucking know it?

[00:33:38] Don't we fucking know it?

[00:33:40] So the...

[00:33:42] I believe that the Food Fighters documentary

[00:33:44] is the one from

[00:33:46] 2000 and

[00:33:48] it might be Sound City,

[00:33:50] but I don't think it is Sound City.

[00:33:52] No, Sound City isn't about Food Fighters.

[00:33:54] I've seen that. It's great though.

[00:33:56] It might be Sound...

[00:33:58] Just shut the fuck up.

[00:34:00] That was not bad either.

[00:34:02] Oh, it's Food Fighters back and forth.

[00:34:04] It's really, really good though.

[00:34:06] I love Food Fighters and I didn't know there was a full documentary.

[00:34:08] Yeah, so it follows him on tour.

[00:34:12] Taylor Hawkins at this time has a relapse.

[00:34:14] He gets put in a hospital.

[00:34:16] And so actually, when Taylor Hawkins died,

[00:34:18] this was the thing I thought about most

[00:34:20] was this has been

[00:34:22] a battle

[00:34:24] and a part of this band's history

[00:34:26] for a long time

[00:34:28] and I have to imagine it hurt them deeply

[00:34:30] because Dave Grohl particularly

[00:34:32] felt that deeply

[00:34:34] in 2011 when this documentary was made.

[00:34:36] But this one, again...

[00:34:38] So it's going to follow him

[00:34:40] in a year of the life and what happens

[00:34:42] is his long-term partner

[00:34:44] who is an author herself...

[00:34:46] I'm going to butcher her name

[00:34:48] but it's Suleika Jawaoud

[00:34:50] I think is her last name

[00:34:52] and she gets leukemia.

[00:34:54] And so it is about

[00:34:56] their story, about their love story

[00:34:58] about how they're dealing with it

[00:35:00] and I don't know if you know anything about John DeBetitza

[00:35:02] but he is a...

[00:35:04] I put him almost

[00:35:06] at the level of Mr. Rogers

[00:35:08] he is as glowing

[00:35:10] and encouraging and as kind

[00:35:12] as anybody I've ever seen

[00:35:14] and when anybody at that level of kindness

[00:35:16] and I think optimism

[00:35:18] goes through darkness

[00:35:20] as leukemia is

[00:35:22] it is just an interesting juxtaposition

[00:35:24] it is a beautiful documentary

[00:35:26] I would recommend this to anybody

[00:35:28] that's on Netflix, it's called American Symphony

[00:35:30] you may cry as I did

[00:35:32] if not you will probably feel things

[00:35:34] but it's really good.

[00:35:36] I hadn't heard about this but yeah I know

[00:35:38] John DeBetitza... It's one of his awards even

[00:35:40] like it is very good.

[00:35:42] Obviously I know him from the Colbert show

[00:35:44] but he also was one of the composers

[00:35:46] for Pixar's Soul as well.

[00:35:48] Great score.

[00:35:50] He is a savant

[00:35:52] he is so stinking talented

[00:35:54] and I think his wife now

[00:35:56] is as well

[00:35:58] but navigating this

[00:36:00] illness

[00:36:02] so interesting fact about this

[00:36:04] and I won't get too deep into their story

[00:36:06] but they met at band camp in high school

[00:36:08] just really interesting

[00:36:10] and

[00:36:12] what was the documentary set off to do a year in the life

[00:36:14] was still a year in the life

[00:36:16] but it really took a turn

[00:36:18] maybe like the worst year

[00:36:20] and so

[00:36:22] but like

[00:36:24] John says things that are just almost

[00:36:26] I don't use this word lightly but like almost prophetic

[00:36:28] it's just beautiful, it is wise

[00:36:30] it is

[00:36:32] so good. We're definitely not getting any

[00:36:34] Benators from John Batiste. Nope probably

[00:36:36] not a lot of those

[00:36:38] but you gotta have salt and pepper

[00:36:40] Not all on my level Brad

[00:36:42] Another film I was assigned was a film

[00:36:44] called

[00:36:46] Notice that you said

[00:36:48] you had a lot of praise for him

[00:36:50] one of the most generous

[00:36:52] giving people you've ever met

[00:36:54] and somehow I was left off that list

[00:36:56] You're on that list

[00:36:58] But also he didn't like list anybody else

[00:37:00] he just mentioned that John Batiste was one of them

[00:37:02] He's just kind and

[00:37:04] Yeah it was a list of one

[00:37:06] But he didn't say hey

[00:37:08] It's not the final list

[00:37:10] He didn't say hey here's a list of 10 people

[00:37:12] that are the most generous and then leave you off of it

[00:37:14] This guy is on the list

[00:37:16] of however many people but I will put him

[00:37:18] on the list

[00:37:20] I feel like there's a lot of vulnerability coming out

[00:37:22] right now what happened

[00:37:24] What did I do? Are you just

[00:37:26] desperate for praise right now?

[00:37:28] What happened? Did somebody say something to you?

[00:37:30] I'll kill him

[00:37:32] Better to joke, it didn't land

[00:37:34] It wasn't bad

[00:37:36] He bring it up

[00:37:38] This is the thing now

[00:37:40] The total episode is going to be

[00:37:42] terrible

[00:37:44] Don't do that

[00:37:46] That's not what I meant

[00:37:50] Alright the other film I watched

[00:37:52] I was assigned by my friend Brad Omen

[00:37:54] Hold on

[00:37:56] We got some

[00:37:58] house cleaning to do

[00:38:00] We've already talked about

[00:38:02] I didn't watch the one that Brad assigned me last time

[00:38:04] I still haven't watched it yet

[00:38:06] But I did watch the one that Brad assigned me

[00:38:08] Yet again you didn't

[00:38:10] watch Looper?

[00:38:12] I haven't had a chance

[00:38:14] Now I'm getting mad

[00:38:16] Let me talk

[00:38:18] It's my turn

[00:38:20] I have the mic

[00:38:22] You have lost your privileges

[00:38:24] because you watched an entirely different movie

[00:38:26] He did

[00:38:28] He actually did

[00:38:30] I'm on your side

[00:38:32] You fucking

[00:38:34] piece of shit

[00:38:36] Okay so here's the thing

[00:38:38] Listeners

[00:38:40] I did not have a chance to watch it

[00:38:42] I did not have a chance to watch it

[00:38:44] I told you last time

[00:38:46] that I watched about half of it

[00:38:48] and I thought I'm not into this yet

[00:38:50] and I know this is a good film

[00:38:52] I'm going to be into it

[00:38:54] It's just my attitude

[00:38:56] Whatever was happening

[00:38:58] I got a lot of stuff going on in my life right now

[00:39:00] So I did not feel like this was the time

[00:39:02] to watch it

[00:39:04] because this last week was really busy for me

[00:39:06] So I didn't have a chance to do it

[00:39:08] I wanted to give Looper the right time

[00:39:10] and the right respect and the right energy

[00:39:12] and the right attention

[00:39:14] when I watch it

[00:39:16] instead of just doing what Ben does

[00:39:18] he'll watch 10 minutes of a film

[00:39:20] and then turn it off

[00:39:22] and then come back 10 minutes later

[00:39:24] It's just a terrible way to watch film

[00:39:26] That's the way he does things

[00:39:28] It is not the way that Nate Lough chooses to live his life

[00:39:30] Listeners

[00:39:32] I will watch Looper

[00:39:34] but I did watch another film

[00:39:36] and I will talk about that now with my friends

[00:39:38] Hi guys, welcome back

[00:39:40] You son of a bitch

[00:39:42] You're still not on

[00:39:44] Aw you son of a bitch

[00:39:48] I don't know if I'm going to add Ben

[00:39:50] Brad back because he seems more angry

[00:39:52] He is angry

[00:39:54] Are you there, Brad?

[00:39:56] You watched a movie

[00:39:58] Hold on, let's catch the listeners up here

[00:40:00] Ben Brad

[00:40:02] We're really nice to let Nate give a proper explanation

[00:40:04] I already calmed him up

[00:40:06] We've already had this conversation

[00:40:08] We're on the same page

[00:40:10] Nate, shut off our mics

[00:40:12] It's the first time he's ever pulled a power move like this

[00:40:14] and frankly, I respect it

[00:40:16] When you produce the...

[00:40:18] But also, fuck you

[00:40:20] There's no way his mic didn't pick up my screaming

[00:40:22] But at the same time

[00:40:24] The listeners talk to me about that

[00:40:26] They're a little mad

[00:40:28] When? What?

[00:40:30] Oh my god

[00:40:32] You watched a whole stupid documentary

[00:40:34] about John Baptiste

[00:40:36] And...

[00:40:38] And yet...

[00:40:40] He's not like John the Baptist

[00:40:42] He's a prophet, right?

[00:40:44] No, he's not wearing camel hair or anything

[00:40:46] He's a musician

[00:40:48] Camel hair, common trade of prophets?

[00:40:50] I mean, John the Baptist wore camel hair

[00:40:52] Okay

[00:40:54] I'm out of my death right now, Brad

[00:40:56] I don't know

[00:40:58] He failed his catechism

[00:41:00] I'm not quite sure that John the Baptist wore camel hair

[00:41:04] You know what, Brad? Take it from there, buddy

[00:41:06] Here's the thing

[00:41:08] I understand you

[00:41:10] Hey, Brad

[00:41:12] You have busy schedule

[00:41:14] You got a lot going on

[00:41:16] And all that stuff

[00:41:18] This is the worst recovery

[00:41:20] of a failed assignment we've had in the podcast

[00:41:22] ever

[00:41:24] We've gone on over three weeks now

[00:41:26] because we had a break

[00:41:28] I think it's actually been about five weeks

[00:41:30] It really has

[00:41:32] I'll get to it

[00:41:34] Guys, guys

[00:41:36] I get it

[00:41:38] You've had a couple of good weeks though

[00:41:40] Guys

[00:41:42] I've got a life

[00:41:44] This is like if...

[00:41:46] I've got things to do

[00:41:48] Yeah, like watching Looper

[00:41:50] I will watch Looper when I'm in the right emotional state

[00:41:52] How many fucking movies you have given us

[00:41:54] that aren't in the best

[00:41:56] place for us for our emotional space?

[00:41:58] I give you great films

[00:42:00] You know how many movies you've given me about

[00:42:02] Dead Fathers?

[00:42:04] Because you have a dead father

[00:42:06] I thought you would resonate with those

[00:42:08] I want to step in here a little bit

[00:42:10] because Nate and I both

[00:42:12] went through a little bit

[00:42:14] of a depression

[00:42:16] Sure, but I didn't assign you

[00:42:18] the breakup after that happened

[00:42:20] But Nate did

[00:42:22] Nate assigned me

[00:42:24] like the weatherman

[00:42:26] That's what I'm saying!

[00:42:28] Yes!

[00:42:30] Looper is a great film

[00:42:32] Nobody even gets a divorce in Looper

[00:42:34] Here's the thing

[00:42:36] Would you rather me watch Looper and think

[00:42:38] I'm just not into this

[00:42:40] I told you this before

[00:42:42] Ben, off the podcast

[00:42:44] you agreed with me

[00:42:46] There's a statute of limitations

[00:42:48] It's freaking, I'm gonna...

[00:42:50] Nate, I need you

[00:42:52] to admit

[00:42:54] that when we had that conversation

[00:42:56] about what you needed, I agreed

[00:42:58] but it was all based on previously

[00:43:00] Previously you were not in a good headspace

[00:43:02] You had admitted at the end of that conversation

[00:43:04] and now I'm feeling better

[00:43:06] and I can't wait to watch this film

[00:43:08] Is Brett still off?

[00:43:10] I don't know if I'm going to put you back on

[00:43:12] I'm not even being as loud as Ben was

[00:43:14] Ben is the one who's being worse

[00:43:16] The thing is, you specifically told us

[00:43:18] you were going to watch Looper

[00:43:20] So it's not even something

[00:43:22] where we're forcing you into it

[00:43:24] You said you were going to

[00:43:26] I will watch Looper because you guys won't

[00:43:28] shut up when I'm talking to the listeners of this podcast

[00:43:30] They deserve our respect

[00:43:32] Alright?

[00:43:34] And what did they come here to listen to?

[00:43:36] Which is taking its time to listen to

[00:43:38] Nate, you're right

[00:43:40] They deserve our respect and the respect comes from

[00:43:42] watching the assigned films

[00:43:44] The film called Saving Silverman

[00:43:46] Didn't watch Looper though

[00:43:48] You know what? To me, all that

[00:43:50] says is

[00:43:52] I don't matter

[00:43:54] What I'll do

[00:43:56] I can't talk about my movies I saw this week

[00:43:58] because Brett already talked about two TV shows

[00:44:00] And now you get to talk about your fucking films

[00:44:02] Also we can't talk about that because we've spent

[00:44:04] 20 minutes talking about this crap

[00:44:06] I am the one

[00:44:08] That I have to level with our listeners

[00:44:10] Because they rely on me to be the rational one

[00:44:12] You said two things

[00:44:14] No but you guys keep on saying

[00:44:16] you're not listening

[00:44:18] That's the problem

[00:44:20] I've been talking to your parents about this

[00:44:22] You guys don't listen

[00:44:24] You literally just met my mom for the first time

[00:44:26] She was delightful too, I really like her

[00:44:28] He's not like five minutes

[00:44:30] She's very nice

[00:44:32] I had lunch with Seal Conowitz this week

[00:44:34] That's cool

[00:44:36] I was there too so it's not weird

[00:44:38] Well Nate's on the dating scene

[00:44:40] My mom is looking

[00:44:42] Tim's getting up there

[00:44:44] He's 70 now

[00:44:46] How was Looper Nate?

[00:44:48] How was saving Silverman?

[00:44:50] It wasn't great

[00:44:52] It's not a great film

[00:44:54] Did you laugh?

[00:44:56] Very little

[00:44:58] Did you laugh at my favorite scene?

[00:45:00] The only thing I remember about that?

[00:45:02] It's the nacho scene

[00:45:04] It's one nacho

[00:45:06] It's probably the best lines in the movie

[00:45:08] I'll laugh at this more in college

[00:45:10] Oh for sure

[00:45:12] It's my turn to talk

[00:45:14] It is not a good film

[00:45:16] Actually I will defend Nate here

[00:45:18] You can't start defending it before he's actually talked about it

[00:45:20] It's true

[00:45:22] Sometimes my friend Brad gets mad

[00:45:24] at little like just things that don't work out

[00:45:26] in a film

[00:45:28] Things like details that don't work out

[00:45:30] There's a nit that I want to pick

[00:45:32] in this film that bothers me

[00:45:34] So

[00:45:36] The three main characters of this film are

[00:45:38] The great Steve Zahn

[00:45:40] Jack Black

[00:45:42] And Jason Biggs

[00:45:44] Who is probably at this point big mania

[00:45:46] He's American Pie

[00:45:48] He's doing all these great films

[00:45:50] Actually Jason Biggs is one of my favorite parts about this

[00:45:52] He's just a delightful guy

[00:45:54] I like Jason Biggs

[00:45:56] The problem with this is they're supposed to be classmates

[00:45:58] They're supposed to be friends from high school

[00:46:00] They're

[00:46:02] very clearly in different generations

[00:46:04] I looked it up

[00:46:06] Steve Zahn was born in

[00:46:08] 1967

[00:46:10] He was 34 years old when this film was made

[00:46:12] Jack Black was born in

[00:46:14] 1969

[00:46:16] He was 32 years old and he looks 32

[00:46:18] Actually looks 35 in this

[00:46:20] Jason Biggs was 23 when they made

[00:46:22] this film in 1978

[00:46:24] Those three don't work, why would you cast

[00:46:26] I never questioned it though, did you

[00:46:28] I don't think you don't look at film with a critical eye like I do

[00:46:30] However

[00:46:32] That's very true, I've known this

[00:46:34] for a while, I didn't actually want to say anything

[00:46:36] In this specific movie

[00:46:38] It drives me crazy, it drives me crazy the whole film

[00:46:40] I do think it works a bit

[00:46:42] To that favor though because both

[00:46:44] Jack Black and Steve Zahn's characters are losers

[00:46:46] And so like

[00:46:48] If they're

[00:46:50] Clearly older

[00:46:52] than him and the movie says

[00:46:54] they're also classmates

[00:46:56] He was mid 30s Steve Zahn, mid 30s making this film

[00:46:58] I still feel like because they're both slackers

[00:47:00] They're not going to put it into the whole like

[00:47:02] other losers and that's why they

[00:47:04] Even if they look more mature they're not more mature

[00:47:06] And Jason Biggs always felt like

[00:47:08] he's an old soul in kids body

[00:47:10] He's a kid

[00:47:12] But he looks like a kid, he has baby face

[00:47:14] He's the only one in there that had a baby face

[00:47:16] Steve Zahn had wrinkles

[00:47:18] Jason Biggs still had baby face

[00:47:20] Jack Black had wrinkles, they were old

[00:47:22] They were old when they made the film

[00:47:24] They were in their 30s, mid 30s

[00:47:26] Just didn't bother me

[00:47:28] I saw this film, I don't think you're really thinking about that

[00:47:30] I've rewatched it, it's saving Silverman

[00:47:32] Several times and

[00:47:34] Doesn't bother me

[00:47:36] I just love that it's just unapologetically

[00:47:38] Unapologetically silly

[00:47:40] Steve Zahn is my favorite part

[00:47:42] I love seeing him in a role like this

[00:47:44] Because he's just so

[00:47:46] Ridiculous and goofy

[00:47:48] Especially when he's yelling

[00:47:50] Out of anger at Jack Black

[00:47:52] In frustration

[00:47:54] There are so many lines in here, the way he says them

[00:47:56] It really cracks me up

[00:47:58] So Scott Grimes could take a

[00:48:00] Lesson from Steve Zahn on yelling

[00:48:02] Oh for sure

[00:48:04] This came out at the same time, or

[00:48:06] In a year difference than Orange County

[00:48:08] Have you guys seen Orange County?

[00:48:10] Colin Hanks, Jack Black

[00:48:12] Such a better film than this

[00:48:14] It's not the same

[00:48:16] They're both comedies

[00:48:18] Orange County has

[00:48:20] Jack Black is silly

[00:48:22] In saving Silverman

[00:48:24] Like a dumb screwball comedy

[00:48:26] Right, and Orange County is

[00:48:28] If A24 existed back then

[00:48:30] They would have tried to do that

[00:48:32] Orange County feels like a Sundance movie

[00:48:34] Saving Silverman is not a Sundance

[00:48:36] But compared to saving Silverman

[00:48:38] Yeah, because any film compared to those

[00:48:40] It does feel like a very independent film

[00:48:42] Compared to a studio shitty comedy

[00:48:44] Saving Silverman

[00:48:46] I just didn't find the lie

[00:48:48] Also let's not forget that Clerks was a Sundance movie

[00:48:50] Clerks was a good film

[00:48:52] What are you doing?

[00:48:54] I'm saying Sundance isn't

[00:48:56] Reserve exclusively for

[00:48:58] So you named the one movie

[00:49:00] That's a straight up comedy in Sundance

[00:49:02] No, no, they came together as a Sundance movie

[00:49:04] Yeah, two? Okay cool

[00:49:06] Most of them are like

[00:49:08] It's a frozen lake and my dad died

[00:49:10] And I feel bad

[00:49:12] See that's just the vibe that Indie films generally

[00:49:14] Yes, and they're all terrible

[00:49:16] And then there are like five good ones a year

[00:49:18] But we're subjected to watch a hundred of them

[00:49:20] That's why we wait until the year

[00:49:22] Everything you just said is the same thing about action movies

[00:49:24] Yeah, so we wait until the years end and we pick the best five

[00:49:26] Fucking idiot

[00:49:28] I didn't find the characters very sympathetic

[00:49:30] So Amanda Pete's the villain here

[00:49:32] I'm not sure I ever thought I would hear this about Saving Silverman

[00:49:34] No, but there are comedies

[00:49:36] Where you're like oh, I like these characters together

[00:49:38] Orange County is one of them

[00:49:40] The lovable losers

[00:49:42] I figure who his friends are

[00:49:44] I don't know who those actors are

[00:49:46] But they're in the van and they want to go

[00:49:48] Surfing all the time with him

[00:49:50] They're lovable losers and they're characters that I cared about

[00:49:52] Even though they've got no future

[00:49:54] And stuff like this

[00:49:56] And you get why Colin Hanks loves them

[00:49:58] Steve's on and Jack's like

[00:50:00] They're not lovable really

[00:50:02] No, they're just idiots

[00:50:04] So I don't know

[00:50:06] Jason Bix is a...

[00:50:08] Yeah, I'm just saying

[00:50:10] They're idiots

[00:50:12] Amanda Pete's awful

[00:50:14] You know she's not great

[00:50:16] Of course

[00:50:18] I just didn't find the development of the film that great

[00:50:22] For me this is...

[00:50:24] I know you love it, but I just...

[00:50:26] It's just one of those movies where

[00:50:28] It's a comedy where I don't need to care about those things

[00:50:30] So like it's like those things don't bother me

[00:50:32] Like there are certain kinds of comedies

[00:50:34] Where like I take them

[00:50:36] At face value and like I like the

[00:50:38] Silly screwball elements about them

[00:50:40] I don't necessarily dig deeper

[00:50:42] You know than that

[00:50:44] Like you know character

[00:50:46] Motivation and all that kind of stuff

[00:50:48] Says the guy that doesn't like Super Troopers

[00:50:50] Yeah, or Rat Race

[00:50:52] I don't dislike Super Troopers

[00:50:54] I don't think it's as great as everyone thinks it is

[00:50:56] Do you think that Super Troopers is not as funny

[00:50:58] As Saving Silverman

[00:51:00] Super Troopers is better than Saving Silverman

[00:51:02] By far

[00:51:04] I think Super Troopers is more clever than Saving Silverman

[00:51:06] But I laugh more at Saving Silverman

[00:51:08] That's insane to me

[00:51:10] That makes me question your taste

[00:51:12] Firstly because I like Steve Zahn

[00:51:14] And Jack Black more than anybody

[00:51:16] Sure

[00:51:18] But the jokes in Super Troopers are tremendously better

[00:51:20] There's also just dumb stuff

[00:51:22] Like it wasn't even silly

[00:51:24] It was just dumb like

[00:51:26] I think what I like about it is

[00:51:28] Amanda Deppmer

[00:51:30] She plays the Sandy Perkis character

[00:51:32] The one that

[00:51:34] Jason Biggs ends up falling in love with

[00:51:36] And he's in love with her

[00:51:38] The whole time I guess you could say

[00:51:40] That's just a dumb part

[00:51:42] Wow, spoiler

[00:51:44] She's like

[00:51:46] I joined the circus

[00:51:48] And I fell in love with

[00:51:50] It's just a dumb part

[00:51:52] And then my brother

[00:51:54] Wolf Boy or something

[00:51:56] We thought we were going to have to put him down for rabies

[00:51:58] It's just a dumb line

[00:52:00] It's just a dumb little mini plot

[00:52:02] I hated that part

[00:52:04] It's reminiscent of comedies in the 80s

[00:52:06] Where they didn't try to adhere much

[00:52:08] Like screenplay rules

[00:52:10] Or like the traditions of storytelling

[00:52:12] It was kind of just like

[00:52:14] A free for all of random weird things

[00:52:16] If you go back and watch

[00:52:18] Wayne's World is a great example of that

[00:52:20] There's a ton of randomness in Wayne's World

[00:52:22] But Wayne's World also still follows

[00:52:24] A very familiar screenplay structure

[00:52:26] Yeah, but there's a lot of weirdness in it

[00:52:28] Still though

[00:52:30] A lot of side weirdness

[00:52:32] But weirdness that has inspiration elsewhere

[00:52:34] That's not the best comparison

[00:52:36] That's one of the greatest comedies

[00:52:38] But all you're saying is

[00:52:40] They say something that doesn't make sense

[00:52:42] And pulls me out of the narrative

[00:52:44] Of the universe they've built

[00:52:46] But I'm expected to go along with it

[00:52:48] Because it's dumb fun

[00:52:50] But Seth McFarland

[00:52:52] Is a king of this

[00:52:54] He does this really well

[00:52:56] And all the things he makes

[00:52:58] This was not funny though

[00:53:00] It just wasn't good

[00:53:02] What you're saying is I respect parody

[00:53:04] Because airplane

[00:53:06] Does not exist

[00:53:08] We're talking about one of the greatest movies in the world

[00:53:10] But no, these are parody movies

[00:53:12] But you told me this is one of the greatest movies

[00:53:14] I never remotely said that

[00:53:16] I even specifically said I think

[00:53:18] This is not a good movie

[00:53:20] But it's very funny

[00:53:22] You're over here defending it

[00:53:24] If you think about his brother being the wolf

[00:53:26] And they have to put him over ribs

[00:53:28] I just love the fact that that went nowhere

[00:53:30] It did nothing for the film

[00:53:32] They're bad

[00:53:34] I love American Pie

[00:53:36] It is not a good film

[00:53:38] I love it still

[00:53:40] I don't know what it has in Iran

[00:53:42] Tomatoes, but it's probably under 30%

[00:53:44] This is like 15 or 20%

[00:53:46] I figure what it is

[00:53:48] 19%

[00:53:50] So I get it

[00:53:52] I get loving these types of things

[00:53:54] But Orange County is a better film

[00:53:58] Yeah, I would never deny that

[00:54:00] I just wanted to make a go on record for that

[00:54:02] Alright, Predo

[00:54:04] Brad, did you want to talk about your aside movie or

[00:54:06] Did you die? You talked about so many movies

[00:54:08] Oh, I didn't, I forgot about that

[00:54:10] My word!

[00:54:12] I saw Hit and Run and it was fine

[00:54:14] Cool, so I watched

[00:54:16] A Vengement

[00:54:18] That's not a real movie

[00:54:20] This is a movie that you made up

[00:54:22] It's a movie on Netflix

[00:54:24] Is it a Predator movie you wrote when you were in the shower?

[00:54:26] A Vengement?

[00:54:28] Yep, I searched for the most underrated

[00:54:30] Revenge movies

[00:54:32] And this popped up and I'm like

[00:54:34] This can't be good

[00:54:36] It's British, it's not necessarily

[00:54:38] Hello, was there a lot of that?

[00:54:40] It's like a guy-richy

[00:54:42] Oi, what are the Avengers, mate?

[00:54:44] It's a guy-richy

[00:54:46] knockoff with

[00:54:48] You know, the skeet all rich to Johnny Depp

[00:54:50] Jason Statham

[00:54:52] Scott Adkins?

[00:54:54] Who is this?

[00:54:56] He's a good actor actually

[00:54:58] As far as action is concerned

[00:55:00] Other than a Vengement

[00:55:02] He can kick some- I mean that's the thing

[00:55:04] The action scenes are incredible

[00:55:06] It's a movie about

[00:55:08] A brother that's in kind of like this

[00:55:10] kind of mafioso

[00:55:12] You know, loan-sharking business

[00:55:14] This has an 84% of right to Rando

[00:55:16] How many reviews?

[00:55:18] Two

[00:55:20] 19

[00:55:22] But still

[00:55:24] What about this where you're going

[00:55:26] Alright, this guy, he's playing a character

[00:55:28] Where he gets caught up with his brother

[00:55:30] And he's always been in his brother's shadow

[00:55:32] His brother does him dirty

[00:55:34] He gets sent to prison

[00:55:36] And he becomes a tough guy

[00:55:38] Like he was like a boxer

[00:55:40] But when he goes to prison

[00:55:42] He gets sent to the most horrific prison

[00:55:44] In Britain or whatever

[00:55:46] And he spends a year there

[00:55:48] His brother puts a bounty on his head

[00:55:50] For 20 grand to kill him

[00:55:52] Because he's a veneers that are metal

[00:55:54] And he just has to endure brutalization

[00:55:56] For like fucking years

[00:55:58] He finally breaks out of prison

[00:56:00] And he confronts his brother in a pub

[00:56:02] And he just starts telling stories about

[00:56:04] What he had to do to survive

[00:56:06] For like seven years while he waits for his brother

[00:56:08] To get there because eventually he's going to kill

[00:56:10] And everybody- I think the saving grace

[00:56:12] Of this movie is everyone in this film

[00:56:14] That is part of his life

[00:56:16] Before he breaks through the door

[00:56:18] Thinks of this guy as like this little

[00:56:20] Woos

[00:56:22] He's a boxer, he's kind of tough

[00:56:24] But like, man

[00:56:26] What a sick event

[00:56:28] Like he was always trying to just

[00:56:30] Hey brother, can I just-

[00:56:32] And when he comes back out

[00:56:34] He's this hardened fucking killer

[00:56:36] Who has in prison murdered like three or four people

[00:56:38] Been stabbed multiple times

[00:56:40] Been just beaten

[00:56:42] Every ounce of him is now just

[00:56:44] I want to kill

[00:56:46] And nobody recognizes them

[00:56:48] He comes in and locks the door of this pub

[00:56:50] And traps all these mafioso people in here

[00:56:52] They're not taking him seriously

[00:56:54] And so he knows this

[00:56:56] And he starts like

[00:56:58] Spoiler-er

[00:57:00] Shoots a guy's head off with a shotgun

[00:57:02] And blood splatters everywhere

[00:57:04] And it's this insane thing

[00:57:06] It was fun to watch

[00:57:08] Not a great movie

[00:57:10] But fun to watch those scenes specifically

[00:57:12] It was awesome

[00:57:14] This director is interesting

[00:57:16] He's got films with like

[00:57:18] I see here

[00:57:20] He did a film in 2022

[00:57:22] That's on AMC Plus

[00:57:24] Called White Elephant

[00:57:26] With Michael Rooker

[00:57:28] Bruce Willis, Olga Kurlinko

[00:57:30] He works with John Malkovich a ton

[00:57:32] So if you ever wonder where John Malkovich is

[00:57:34] He's in Jesse Johnson films

[00:57:36] But

[00:57:38] He does these films with these kind of

[00:57:40] Formerly A-list guys

[00:57:42] John Boyce in the next one

[00:57:44] Yeah

[00:57:46] And makes

[00:57:48] Somewhat decent films with them somehow

[00:57:50] It was crazy because there was enough to like about it

[00:57:52] Where I was engaged the whole time

[00:57:54] And I respected what the

[00:57:56] Especially the fight scenes were incredible

[00:57:58] But when he's sitting on the bar stool

[00:58:00] Drinking a pint and telling these stories

[00:58:02] I'm like, oh boy, this could use some work

[00:58:04] But when the actual action scenes happened

[00:58:06] It was fantastic

[00:58:08] It's on Netflix?

[00:58:10] Yeah, it's like hour 30, you know

[00:58:12] Yeah, it's starting to know when I know

[00:58:14] Yeah, Scott Adkins and no one else

[00:58:16] That's it

[00:58:18] There you go

[00:58:20] Interesting, okay

[00:58:22] What else do you watch?

[00:58:24] What were you saying?

[00:58:26] Well before my assignment I watched

[00:58:28] Sympathy for the Devil

[00:58:30] I was supposed to interview

[00:58:32] Nicholas Cage and Joel Kinneman for this

[00:58:34] Together and then the strike happened

[00:58:36] So this is

[00:58:38] Not a good movie

[00:58:40] It is

[00:58:42] A very bad movie

[00:58:44] It's a 58% on

[00:58:46] Everyone that likes it, it's wrong

[00:58:48] But Cage

[00:58:50] How's Nick?

[00:58:52] Unhinged Cage is of course

[00:58:54] It's watchable because of that

[00:58:56] I love watching Unhinged Cage

[00:58:58] I will spoil the entire film

[00:59:00] Because I don't want you to watch this

[00:59:02] Watch a History of Violence

[00:59:04] Is that what this is trying to be?

[00:59:06] Yes, this is

[00:59:08] A sea or maybe

[00:59:10] Dealist knockoff of History of Violence

[00:59:12] When

[00:59:14] Nicholas Cage holds hostage

[00:59:16] Joel Kinneman's character

[00:59:18] When Joel Kinneman is at the hospital to watch his

[00:59:20] Son or daughter be born

[00:59:22] And instead, Nicholas Cage

[00:59:24] He puts it into his driver

[00:59:26] And then they go

[00:59:28] And the entire movie is

[00:59:30] Nicholas Cage is like, you're going to act like you're somebody or not

[00:59:32] And it finally gets to the point where

[00:59:34] Like, yeah, it's him

[00:59:36] But the whole time with the title

[00:59:38] Sympathy for the Devil

[00:59:40] There were a few scenes in this movie early on

[00:59:42] Where Nicholas Cage

[00:59:44] Said something to him while he was driving

[00:59:46] That only the

[00:59:48] Joel's character was thinking

[00:59:50] And so it made it sound like or think

[00:59:52] Like maybe he is the devil

[00:59:54] Maybe he is actually able

[00:59:56] To hear his thought

[00:59:58] But no, just a guy

[01:00:00] Just guessing

[01:00:02] Like I'm like, okay, well that paid off nothing

[01:00:04] And then at the end

[01:00:06] So was it disappointing?

[01:00:08] It was terribly disappointing

[01:00:10] What makes you think he's not the devil?

[01:00:12] No, because he fucking

[01:00:14] Because the thing that makes me feel like

[01:00:16] He's not the devil

[01:00:18] Is that he admits that

[01:00:20] He's just a guy that knows him from

[01:00:22] Back in the day and was come to kill him

[01:00:24] And they were supposed to drive

[01:00:26] To that guy's house to get murdered

[01:00:28] Just like William Hertz house

[01:00:30] History violence, but instead

[01:00:32] Josh Kimmel again's character

[01:00:34] Stomps on his face and shoots him

[01:00:36] And actually kills him

[01:00:38] Ben, the greatest trick the devil ever pulled

[01:00:40] Convincing people that he didn't exist

[01:00:42] This is so

[01:00:44] This is so dog shit

[01:00:46] It's not good

[01:00:48] I was so disappointed

[01:00:50] Because it was this whole build up

[01:00:52] Something good is going to happen

[01:00:54] Nope, he just

[01:00:56] Sorry for assigning that film for you

[01:00:58] Third of sympathy for the devil before

[01:01:00] You decided to watch it

[01:01:02] I watched the trailer

[01:01:04] Actually, I'm reading a lot of reviews

[01:01:06] Of this right now and people

[01:01:08] No, we didn't review this

[01:01:10] But there's a lot of people praising

[01:01:12] Nicholas Cage's performance here

[01:01:14] And again, I said that's the saving

[01:01:16] That's why I wasn't mad at the whole film

[01:01:18] When you're watching it

[01:01:20] And you think there's a build up

[01:01:22] He's unhinged in the best way

[01:01:24] He's doing the whole

[01:01:26] Is when

[01:01:28] Nothing matters

[01:01:30] And it's just

[01:01:32] You were who I said you were the whole time

[01:01:34] And I'm just going to kill you

[01:01:36] Okay, cool, and nothing happens

[01:01:38] The plot of the film is just not good

[01:01:40] It's just terrible

[01:01:42] I'm going to watch it

[01:01:44] And I hope you love it

[01:01:46] So that you can tell me why I'm wrong

[01:01:48] Like oh cool

[01:01:50] Because I sat down

[01:01:52] And within the first 15 minutes

[01:01:54] I was like oh, he is the guy

[01:01:56] That Nicholas Cage thinks he is

[01:01:58] This is history of violence

[01:02:00] And I was hoping the whole time

[01:02:02] That maybe

[01:02:04] I think he got like a limited release

[01:02:06] But I think he was primarily VOD

[01:02:08] I said they can't just do that again

[01:02:10] There has to be some twist and yet no twist

[01:02:12] Well, I thought it was history of violence

[01:02:14] Was the first movie to ever do that

[01:02:16] But it's so paint by numbers though

[01:02:18] Like it's so simple

[01:02:20] Because again, Brad

[01:02:22] I'm not a movie viewer

[01:02:24] Stop it

[01:02:26] Sometimes I watch films and then

[01:02:28] When the twist happens

[01:02:30] Oh shit, but even I am able to tell

[01:02:32] Within the first few minutes

[01:02:34] You've seen enough movies where

[01:02:36] Especially this kind of film

[01:02:38] You have seen a lot of them

[01:02:40] I would say when it comes to art house

[01:02:42] You don't always pick up everything

[01:02:44] They're putting down

[01:02:46] I wouldn't see it as a hard time

[01:02:48] Connecting emotionally with those kind of movies

[01:02:50] Trying to make me win something

[01:02:52] You're not really a stew when it comes to comedy

[01:02:54] Saving silverman

[01:02:56] Just palm the ore or whatever

[01:02:58] First of all, silverman would never

[01:03:00] Ever be out for the palm of the ore

[01:03:02] I don't know what clerks was

[01:03:04] It was comedy

[01:03:06] Clerks were the Sundance

[01:03:08] That's not where the palm of the ore is

[01:03:10] The palm of the ore from Cannes

[01:03:12] You know you're from that too

[01:03:14] Cannes

[01:03:16] Can I have a time out here

[01:03:18] You said this is released on VOD

[01:03:22] According to the Wikipedia

[01:03:24] I'm sure it may be slightly more than this

[01:03:26] But it made $150,000

[01:03:28] This film was produced

[01:03:30] Partially by Nicholas Cage

[01:03:32] I'm sure I had a budget of what

[01:03:34] $5 million or something to make this film

[01:03:36] Oh yeah, this is almost like Locke

[01:03:38] They're in the car 80% of the time

[01:03:40] So how do

[01:03:42] If you're releasing on VOD

[01:03:44] How do you recoup this money

[01:03:46] Well, I mean

[01:03:48] I've noticed there's a lot

[01:03:50] I watch movie releases and stuff like this

[01:03:52] And there's a lot of films that just get a

[01:03:54] VOD release

[01:03:56] And I'm not talking like Netflix or anything

[01:03:58] I'm talking just VOD rentals

[01:04:00] And they can't be making that money back

[01:04:02] No, I mean, so some of it is like

[01:04:04] You won't make your entire budget

[01:04:06] Back on VOD alone

[01:04:08] But what you might make it back for

[01:04:10] Is licensing rights for when it's on cable

[01:04:12] When it's on network TV

[01:04:14] It's the long game a little bit

[01:04:16] If it's available on a plane or something like that

[01:04:18] Every time a movie is available anywhere

[01:04:20] There's like a separate licensing fee

[01:04:22] And this might be on Netflix next year

[01:04:24] It might be on Netflix in six months

[01:04:26] And sometimes

[01:04:28] A lot of times if you see a movie

[01:04:30] And it's getting a VOD only release

[01:04:32] That's either because the company

[01:04:34] That made it doesn't have enough money

[01:04:36] To give it a proper distribution

[01:04:38] Or they couldn't find a big distributor

[01:04:40] To actually give it a full release

[01:04:42] It's harder and harder now

[01:04:44] Okay, that's right

[01:04:46] I was just thinking like a film like this

[01:04:48] That has two major stars in it

[01:04:50] That are going to require some money to get in the film

[01:04:52] Obviously Nicholas Pitches

[01:04:54] Besides those two there aren't really

[01:04:56] Yeah, the cast doesn't look big at all

[01:04:58] So they save some money there

[01:05:00] But like how it's going to be

[01:05:02] At least a couple million dollars to make this film

[01:05:04] How are you going to on VOD get that money back

[01:05:06] And this isn't the only film

[01:05:08] I see these all the time where films are just released on VOD

[01:05:10] Apple TV didn't buy them, Voodoo didn't buy them

[01:05:12] I also feel like we are

[01:05:14] Maybe underestimating the number of people

[01:05:16] Maybe like me that see

[01:05:18] Josh and Nick are starting

[01:05:20] You did pay to rent this

[01:05:22] And the number of people that see the new

[01:05:24] Nicklication film and they remember that

[01:05:26] It might be in the one million to two million dollar range

[01:05:28] Of the first few weeks that it's out

[01:05:30] And by the way

[01:05:32] Apple is really good about that

[01:05:34] Here's the top 100 now

[01:05:36] They've changed it where your store and your purchases

[01:05:38] They just changed it

[01:05:40] You've been buying things that you didn't know

[01:05:42] They now have a top 100

[01:05:44] I'm scrolling and like oh shit

[01:05:46] Number 49 the marvels

[01:05:48] And I clicked it and was like oh I didn't know

[01:05:50] And I couldn't

[01:05:52] It's a good point there too Brad

[01:05:54] To say that just because they don't recoup it

[01:05:56] Right away doesn't mean in distribution

[01:05:58] Throughout the history of this film's

[01:06:00] Life they're not going to

[01:06:02] And the studio

[01:06:04] Will obviously if it's

[01:06:06] This is a three million dollar budget

[01:06:08] And in its life cycle it will

[01:06:10] Generate 2.9

[01:06:12] It will almost break even but it will lose

[01:06:14] $100,000 that is enough for the studio

[01:06:16] Every single time to take that risk

[01:06:18] Because every time they do that

[01:06:20] Here's okay well the next Nicklication

[01:06:22] Movie that cost three million made

[01:06:24] 80 so they're going to still bank

[01:06:26] On some bankable stars to do that

[01:06:28] Hey

[01:06:30] Benny were you assigned a movie or no

[01:06:32] I did but I've seen some other things too

[01:06:34] Because fuck Brad

[01:06:36] Now we're going to go two hours long sorry

[01:06:38] We'll just want to talk about trailers

[01:06:40] I watched

[01:06:42] I don't really care about the trailers

[01:06:44] I watched popstar never stop

[01:06:46] Stopping I've seen it

[01:06:48] Never stop never stopping

[01:06:50] Is it never stop never stopping

[01:06:52] Why are we talking about this again

[01:06:54] You've seen this so many times

[01:06:56] The podcast is about movies we've seen

[01:06:58] But I thought it was supposed to be movies we haven't

[01:07:00] No but like you can bring out movies you've seen

[01:07:02] I'm going to talk about them how great they are

[01:07:04] And if I know Ben he's going to want to talk about

[01:07:06] I am okay with talking about how great this family is

[01:07:08] All I'm saying is this is a movie I watched

[01:07:10] It is so good it's great still great

[01:07:12] Still holds up but we've

[01:07:14] What is your favorite part of this

[01:07:16] We've definitely talked about movies we've already seen

[01:07:18] We just ended up watching

[01:07:20] I think it's a nice week actually

[01:07:22] I'm still a little mad about what happened earlier

[01:07:24] Yeah join the club buddy

[01:07:26] Hey I feel like kind of we're on a loop

[01:07:28] Oh

[01:07:30] Hey is there that's a reference you'd get

[01:07:32] If you saw the movie

[01:07:34] I fucking wish

[01:07:36] That was like a big part of the movie

[01:07:38] Hey hey

[01:07:40] I'm Bruce Willis we're on a loop

[01:07:42] So as

[01:07:44] You watch this film and you've seen it so many times

[01:07:46] Is there a new part that you like

[01:07:48] Different things always

[01:07:50] Is there a new part that you like about it more

[01:07:52] I've seen this movie 11 or 12 times now

[01:07:54] Honestly and this is

[01:07:56] So let's say this is my 12th viewing

[01:07:58] And for the first time ever

[01:08:00] I spent more time

[01:08:02] Paying attention to the

[01:08:04] Catchphrase verse

[01:08:06] You knew it?

[01:08:08] Squirrel jam

[01:08:10] DJ Tanner

[01:08:12] Also

[01:08:14] Hunter the Hungry

[01:08:16] So when he

[01:08:18] Confronts Connor

[01:08:20] And sorry

[01:08:22] When Connor is confused about

[01:08:24] Who maybe did this as a prank

[01:08:26] And maybe it was me

[01:08:28] Nah it wasn't

[01:08:30] Later on in the movie

[01:08:32] It was me

[01:08:34] I laughed

[01:08:36] I watched it with Ashley

[01:08:38] And we were sitting there

[01:08:40] And she's like

[01:08:42] Pause it

[01:08:44] Cause I was cackling when he goes

[01:08:46] It was me

[01:08:48] And I went

[01:08:50] And she's like pause it

[01:08:52] Why is that funny

[01:08:54] You do connect with these

[01:08:56] Different moments in the film

[01:08:58] I mean

[01:09:00] Again

[01:09:02] I told you

[01:09:04] Can we get the wolves to be more quiet

[01:09:06] Cause that's a very

[01:09:08] No

[01:09:10] But they don't even know their wolves

[01:09:12] And he just was

[01:09:14] No

[01:09:16] Also

[01:09:18] When they cut the black into the bees

[01:09:20] Flameflour scene

[01:09:22] It's such a

[01:09:24] And I did pause it and I was like

[01:09:26] She doesn't give a shit

[01:09:28] So this is brilliant writing

[01:09:30] And here's why

[01:09:32] It's on another level

[01:09:34] We don't have the money for this scene

[01:09:36] But this is a fun way to do it

[01:09:38] Where we can still do it

[01:09:40] And also man

[01:09:42] So a cool thing they did

[01:09:44] There was an exclusive steel book release

[01:09:46] Of pop star that I think

[01:09:48] Shout Factory did

[01:09:50] In addition runs a certain movies

[01:09:52] On steel book and sometimes they have

[01:09:54] Packages that come with an exclusive poster

[01:09:56] That's only available with so many copies

[01:09:58] Of the movie

[01:10:00] And I got pop star because

[01:10:02] It came with a poster

[01:10:04] Depicting that scene from the movie

[01:10:06] With the bees and everything

[01:10:08] Which of course does not exist

[01:10:10] Yeah that's fantastic

[01:10:12] No again holds up

[01:10:14] For some reason you're hearing my voice

[01:10:16] Right now and you've never seen

[01:10:18] You just

[01:10:20] Shut the podcast off

[01:10:22] Pull your car over

[01:10:24] And download it and watch it

[01:10:26] It's fantastic

[01:10:28] And then I watched Horrible Bosses

[01:10:30] Which happens in a while

[01:10:32] And it still is very funny

[01:10:34] It's funny to me because

[01:10:36] Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell

[01:10:38] And Jennifer Aniston

[01:10:40] Kevin Spacey even

[01:10:42] I love it because the main three guys

[01:10:44] Those are the stars of the film

[01:10:46] And you've got these

[01:10:48] Significant at the time

[01:10:50] A-list actors and actresses

[01:10:52] Playing these bosses

[01:10:54] And I think that's probably why it was so successful

[01:10:56] If you had these unknown actors

[01:10:58] Playing those parts

[01:11:00] I've seen this film four or five times

[01:11:02] That's probably I keep leaning into

[01:11:04] Like that's why this movie works

[01:11:06] Colin Farrell is so good

[01:11:08] Kevin Spacey is a dick

[01:11:10] And you kind of get it

[01:11:12] Jennifer Aniston is kind of trying to be

[01:11:14] A sexual harassment, I get it

[01:11:16] But in this movie Colin Farrell

[01:11:18] Is the reason why I'm like

[01:11:20] They should all die

[01:11:22] He's so bad

[01:11:24] I fucking love him as the villain

[01:11:26] He's a perfect, it's one of the more perfect villains I've seen

[01:11:28] We're going to trim the fat around here

[01:11:30] You know what, I want you to fire the fat people

[01:11:32] And the way he says it right

[01:11:34] Or like he wants to fire the kind of wheelchair

[01:11:36] He's rolling around, he can't even

[01:11:38] He's lazy, like what

[01:11:40] He's so terrible, I love it so much

[01:11:42] My favorite

[01:11:44] Underrated lines is

[01:11:46] Jason Bateman's delivery

[01:11:48] When they get arrested

[01:11:50] And he's like you were drag racing

[01:11:52] In a Prius

[01:11:54] I don't win a lot

[01:11:56] Yeah, no and then I watched about

[01:11:58] Smith and it was sad

[01:12:00] So

[01:12:02] Sad, sad or no?

[01:12:04] It's not sad, sad

[01:12:06] It's pretty fucking sad

[01:12:08] It's incredibly sad

[01:12:10] Both of you assholes were like

[01:12:12] Yeah, but don't worry, at the end

[01:12:14] First of all I didn't say that

[01:12:16] You did

[01:12:18] Go back in the day

[01:12:20] Don't worry

[01:12:22] It's redeeming or like there's some

[01:12:24] It's worth it in the end

[01:12:26] I don't know, it's not

[01:12:28] You didn't like this one?

[01:12:30] No, I get it

[01:12:32] It's a character study

[01:12:34] Which is great

[01:12:36] He is

[01:12:38] I never argue about a film like this being good

[01:12:40] This movie is good

[01:12:42] It's also insanely sad

[01:12:44] And why do you want to watch things like this

[01:12:46] This is

[01:12:48] Well

[01:12:50] So my work life

[01:12:52] The thing I built my entire life

[01:12:54] Is trash

[01:12:56] The relationship I had with my wife

[01:12:58] And my best friend

[01:13:00] He was writing her love letters 30 years ago

[01:13:02] So that's how

[01:13:04] My daughter does not respect me

[01:13:06] Till it makes her admit

[01:13:08] And then

[01:13:10] The redeeming quality is I get to go

[01:13:12] Hang out with this trash family

[01:13:14] And be uncomfortable all the time

[01:13:16] But then don't worry, I kind of get it

[01:13:18] At the end

[01:13:20] But no, he doesn't

[01:13:22] It's not a revelation

[01:13:24] He changes life

[01:13:26] Like does it always happen in like revelations

[01:13:28] We just sometimes start making the right changes

[01:13:30] Why does anybody want to watch this kind of film

[01:13:32] So I would try to go back

[01:13:34] And confirm I did not give you any

[01:13:36] Leading whatsoever that this was going to be

[01:13:38] An uplifting movie

[01:13:40] What did you say?

[01:13:42] I said that one has a sexy scene too

[01:13:44] You didn't know it when you see it

[01:13:46] By the way, did you like the sexy scene?

[01:13:48] No, I knew about it

[01:13:50] I knew Kathy Bay's got a negative

[01:13:52] No, no, I literally that's it because

[01:13:54] You said more though

[01:13:56] No, I didn't, I swear to God

[01:13:58] Those are the only two things I said about about Schmidt

[01:14:00] Because Nate is the one who like

[01:14:02] I didn't know about the sexy scene

[01:14:04] I remember feeling that

[01:14:06] This character that is

[01:14:08] I don't want to say morally

[01:14:10] To pray but certainly

[01:14:12] Down on us

[01:14:14] Not a great person either

[01:14:16] Some of these things where you get

[01:14:18] Why his life is in shambles

[01:14:20] I felt like at the end

[01:14:22] He was starting to see a little bit

[01:14:24] Of maybe a little bit of sunshine

[01:14:26] A little bit of light

[01:14:28] Or a little bit of clarity

[01:14:30] But that's the thing like

[01:14:32] Again, I understand that this is a movie

[01:14:34] That like the character

[01:14:36] It's not resolved at the end though

[01:14:38] But it shouldn't in this movie

[01:14:40] Like if the character literally was like

[01:14:42] You know what? I'm gonna go fuck Kathy Bates

[01:14:44] And start my life over

[01:14:46] It would have been weird

[01:14:48] For the whole narrative

[01:14:50] The driven narrative of the entire film

[01:14:52] Is that he is this person

[01:14:54] And I never wanted to get away from that

[01:14:56] Because I did enjoy his performance

[01:14:58] Like summed it up at the end

[01:15:00] However, it doesn't mean that it was like

[01:15:02] At all redeeming or elitist

[01:15:04] It was just it ended

[01:15:06] Man, I'm worried about becoming Schmidt

[01:15:08] Man

[01:15:10] I don't know why

[01:15:12] Like I'm like

[01:15:14] Do you feel like this is me giving you a dead dad movie

[01:15:16] A wake up call?

[01:15:18] The weather man and about

[01:15:20] Hey, this is your life now Ben

[01:15:22] I want you to watch movies

[01:15:24] And by the way, never gonna get better

[01:15:26] But also towards the end of your life

[01:15:29] You'll be like hey

[01:15:31] Hey Ben

[01:15:32] It's not as bad as I thought

[01:15:33] Hey Ben, hey Ben

[01:15:35] We're not even recording tonight actually

[01:15:37] This whole

[01:15:38] This is an intervention

[01:15:39] To get to this point

[01:15:40] We're worried about you

[01:15:42] I'm worried about you because you give me these movies

[01:15:45] That are so just depressing

[01:15:47] And then you don't even watch the movie you're supposed to watch

[01:15:49] About Schmidt is not

[01:15:51] It's a good movie but it's not

[01:15:53] It's not uplifting, it's not

[01:15:55] I just feel like I might have to be uplifting

[01:15:57] I wanna, I don't know

[01:15:59] Maybe Ben is just hoping for you to give him a little bit of hope

[01:16:02] Anything

[01:16:03] Just something I can actually enjoy

[01:16:05] Musicals are helpful and you don't like them

[01:16:07] I'm not sure that Fiddler is the most uplifting thing

[01:16:10] That is an exception

[01:16:12] And I said that kind of treacherously

[01:16:15] Like maybe I'm missing something

[01:16:17] Nope, nope, nope, that one is

[01:16:19] Not sure that Fiddler is

[01:16:21] But then again, I don't know musical theater

[01:16:23] Holocausting

[01:16:24] Maybe there's something I'm missing

[01:16:26] You know what, Les Mis is coming back to theaters

[01:16:28] Why don't you sign that to Ben?

[01:16:29] I've not given him Les Mis

[01:16:31] I specifically have not given him Les Mis

[01:16:33] They're on a ship though, that should be good

[01:16:35] That's maybe like 10%

[01:16:37] That's all I know about it

[01:16:39] Very small portion

[01:16:40] I don't know, people on ships are happy

[01:16:42] No they're not, Ben

[01:16:44] There is not a single fucking happy person in Les Mis

[01:16:47] No, literally

[01:16:49] My assumption is

[01:16:51] The translation is the miserable

[01:16:53] I mean, I don't speak French but like that's

[01:16:55] Speaking of Les Mis

[01:16:57] It is coming back to theaters

[01:16:59] That's what I just said, 20 years

[01:17:01] Hey Ben, your next movie I'm going to sign you

[01:17:03] The Fucking Depressants

[01:17:05] Oh don't worry, it's not what you think

[01:17:07] They're all depressed

[01:17:09] I've given you non-depressing films

[01:17:11] Name the last one

[01:17:13] I don't know what I've given you

[01:17:15] I know I have

[01:17:17] Yeah, you know what

[01:17:19] That's an unfair question

[01:17:21] I should not have asked that

[01:17:23] What was the one that I gave you

[01:17:25] Schindler's List, again I loved it

[01:17:27] It was historically accurate and I enjoyed it

[01:17:29] But again buddy

[01:17:31] Oh with Ben What's His Nuts

[01:17:33] I gave you that film, it was a good film

[01:17:35] What?

[01:17:37] Ben What's His Nuts

[01:17:39] Leave No Trace, that's the happiest movie

[01:17:41] That's the happiest movie

[01:17:43] You know what, again, pretty

[01:17:45] I imagine the daughter went on to have a good life

[01:17:47] You've been some laughs

[01:17:49] I will tell you, the universe that they built

[01:17:51] Was very believable, also very sad

[01:17:53] I'm just giving you a picture of my soul

[01:17:55] What I did, what I did

[01:17:57] I want you to be better, Nate

[01:17:59] Can I talk over here real quick

[01:18:01] So just real quick, I love you to death

[01:18:03] You ever need to talk

[01:18:05] I bet that therapist is a lot of money to talk

[01:18:07] I know but I don't think they are doing a good job

[01:18:09] So we should talk about it

[01:18:11] Sorry about that

[01:18:13] I do wonder if in our text

[01:18:15] What you misconstrued was me saying

[01:18:17] Don't worry Ben, I'll lift you up

[01:18:19] And maybe you thought I said it'll lift you up

[01:18:21] Oh, I actually did kind of just glance at that

[01:18:23] Yeah, I was saying I'll lift you up

[01:18:25] With the movie that I give you

[01:18:27] I'm not joking, I literally thought

[01:18:29] That it'll lift you up

[01:18:31] Okay, at least at the end

[01:18:33] And then I was waiting for that

[01:18:35] And then it didn't happen and I was like

[01:18:37] What the fuck is Brad talking about

[01:18:39] Also I thought maybe the bar is so low for you guys

[01:18:41] Where like you watch these depressing movies

[01:18:43] And like the last part of it

[01:18:45] Is their depression goes from zero

[01:18:47] To point oh one

[01:18:49] Well, that's it

[01:18:51] I gave you little women

[01:18:53] Sure

[01:18:57] It's half sad

[01:18:59] It's a dramedy

[01:19:01] More drama than Edie

[01:19:03] Yeah, like at least a character dies in it

[01:19:05] Chris Cooper is so sad when he can't go in

[01:19:07] Like he's stuck at the fence and he can't go in

[01:19:09] That's the part that you're bringing up

[01:19:11] In your mind that you remember

[01:19:13] So sad

[01:19:15] I just can't go back into the house

[01:19:17] The comedy I gave Ben was

[01:19:19] The part where Chris Cooper was so sad that he

[01:19:21] Was really sad and that made me cry

[01:19:23] Alright, you know what

[01:19:25] Now I know what to give you next time

[01:19:27] I'm gonna find the sad part

[01:19:29] Don't you like it when films make you feel things

[01:19:31] I cry my real life all the time

[01:19:33] I'm so sad all the time

[01:19:35] Everything's horrible

[01:19:37] The world's on fire

[01:19:39] When I watch movies I wanna feel like Eddie the Eagle

[01:19:41] Eddie the Eagle's great

[01:19:43] Actually uplifting

[01:19:45] Baby Driver, have you seen The Driver?

[01:19:47] Yes, or something like Revenge

[01:19:49] Where if it's that bad

[01:19:51] Something happens to those bad people

[01:19:53] The Revengers

[01:19:55] You're talking about Revenge the movie Revenge

[01:19:57] Or you're talking about Revenge as a pro

[01:19:59] As a pro

[01:20:01] Alex Struick was a genre

[01:20:03] Oh, cause there was a good movie called Revenge

[01:20:05] I've seen it

[01:20:07] There's not a film called Revenge

[01:20:09] Let's make sure we're talking about the same movie

[01:20:11] Is the one with Olivia Wilde?

[01:20:13] No, that's a different movie

[01:20:15] I think it's a Spanish film

[01:20:17] And it's about a girl

[01:20:19] Who almost gets killed

[01:20:21] But then she ends up surviving

[01:20:23] And she tries to kill

[01:20:25] The man who tried to kill her

[01:20:27] What is the one that I'm thinking of with Olivia Wilde

[01:20:29] That was a revenge film?

[01:20:31] I'm not sure actually

[01:20:33] I've decided the next film I'm gonna give you

[01:20:35] Is Tinker Tailor's Soldier Spot

[01:20:37] I've seen that film

[01:20:39] It's just boring

[01:20:41] It is very boring

[01:20:43] It's so boring

[01:20:45] There's no real... I love Garrett Oldman

[01:20:47] But in that movie I'm like, what are we doing here?

[01:20:49] I don't care

[01:20:51] It has been 2 hours and 15 minutes

[01:20:53] And I don't know what we're doing here

[01:20:55] In my soul I was like, I have to like this

[01:20:57] I went to the theater

[01:20:59] There are so many good people in this

[01:21:01] And it seems like it's really well written

[01:21:03] I went to the theater to see it

[01:21:05] I was so bored

[01:21:07] It is a slow burn

[01:21:09] I would never say it's bad by any means

[01:21:11] You also love saving silverman

[01:21:13] So I don't know what to think anymore

[01:21:15] Are you thinking of a vigilante?

[01:21:17] That's what the movie is

[01:21:19] Right on

[01:21:21] I will actually talk about Hit and Run

[01:21:23] Because you hate Dax Shepard

[01:21:25] I don't hate Dax Shepard

[01:21:27] I don't really get him though

[01:21:29] I don't like him

[01:21:31] I don't get why people like him

[01:21:33] Everyone says he's one of the nicest guys

[01:21:35] In show business

[01:21:37] He's a very good guy

[01:21:39] From what I understand

[01:21:41] I understand why he's appealing people

[01:21:43] I just never thought he's very funny

[01:21:45] And I don't really like him in movies very much

[01:21:47] Is it because you've got a thing with

[01:21:49] Sports Bros and he's a little bit of

[01:21:51] A little bit of a bro

[01:21:53] It's not even that

[01:21:55] I've never really liked anything about his delivery

[01:21:57] He's never really made me laugh

[01:21:59] I don't know what it is

[01:22:01] So I don't know necessarily

[01:22:03] That Dax Shepard has had

[01:22:05] A vehicle in which I can point to this

[01:22:07] Has he ever had a great film?

[01:22:09] This is the thing that he...

[01:22:11] And I don't mean any disrespect

[01:22:13] Because again, I know he's a good person

[01:22:15] Where did he come from?

[01:22:17] What was the thing that was like

[01:22:19] Oh now he's a movie star

[01:22:21] What are we doing?

[01:22:23] I think his...

[01:22:25] He was on punked

[01:22:27] There's a film that I love

[01:22:29] That he started in

[01:22:31] Was it Without a Paddle?

[01:22:33] Yes, Freaking Love Without a Paddle

[01:22:35] He's had a lot of roles in comedies

[01:22:37] Like Don't Ever Judge Freakin Without a Paddle

[01:22:39] When you gave me Savings of the Moon

[01:22:41] Chips, Without a Paddle is trash

[01:22:43] Oh, Without a Paddle is Freakin' hilarious

[01:22:45] Chips is them like putting

[01:22:47] Trying to give Dax Shepard his own 20

[01:22:49] Exactly, but it didn't work

[01:22:51] The film I think that he got most famous for

[01:22:53] Was Idiocracy, wasn't it?

[01:22:55] Yes, that's a good point

[01:22:57] But he is though

[01:22:59] Yeah, everyone is

[01:23:01] But you said it in the way

[01:23:03] Because I don't like it

[01:23:05] He's a fucking idiot

[01:23:07] I'm trying to give you a chance here buddy

[01:23:09] So yeah, I watched Hit and Run

[01:23:11] Because that's what you signed Ben

[01:23:13] Because I liked that movie

[01:23:15] I wanted to give it a fair shake

[01:23:17] 48% in Robin Tomino's

[01:23:19] Unlike Savings of the Moon at 19

[01:23:21] It's honestly not bad

[01:23:23] But I do think that there

[01:23:25] There is a much better movie here

[01:23:27] Because I wish that they had

[01:23:29] For all the favors that Dax Shepard called

[01:23:31] And to get his friends in this movie

[01:23:33] And to get this movie made

[01:23:35] I don't think he called enough of the funny ones

[01:23:37] To make the script really pop

[01:23:39] Because there are like

[01:23:41] Three or four really great jokes

[01:23:43] In this movie

[01:23:45] Like there was a few hilarious scenes

[01:23:47] And I was like, oh that's really funny

[01:23:49] But it's the core of the movie

[01:23:51] And I respect what he's trying to do here

[01:23:53] Because it's a clever concept

[01:23:55] And I wish that it was executed

[01:23:57] A little bit more

[01:23:59] Just well

[01:24:01] Because the idea

[01:24:03] Is that Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell

[01:24:05] Are a couple

[01:24:07] They live in this small town

[01:24:09] All of a sudden Kristen Bell

[01:24:11] Her job is in danger

[01:24:13] And she thinks she's going to get fired

[01:24:15] But she actually ends up getting a new job

[01:24:17] But she has to go to LA to get it

[01:24:19] And so Dax Shepard is willing

[01:24:21] To get psyched about it

[01:24:23] Because he has some kind of history in LA

[01:24:25] And you don't really know what it is

[01:24:27] You slowly find it out in the first 30 minutes of the movie

[01:24:29] And it's that he was in witness protection

[01:24:31] He turned in his friends

[01:24:33] After they got fingered for a bank robbery

[01:24:35] That went wrong and somebody got killed

[01:24:37] And so he testified against them

[01:24:39] And he's been under a different name ever since

[01:24:41] And Kristen Bell doesn't know any of this

[01:24:43] So when she finds all this out

[01:24:45] It's kind of like a big thing

[01:24:47] She doesn't trust him anymore

[01:24:49] And so Dax Shepard is a very passionate person

[01:24:51] When it comes to cars and stuff like that

[01:24:53] He actually used a lot of his own cars

[01:24:55] In this movie to make it

[01:24:57] He has an extensive car collection

[01:24:59] The main black Lincoln in this movie

[01:25:01] Is his

[01:25:03] And because this was an independent production

[01:25:05] That only cost like $2 million

[01:25:07] He's been doing this for a long time

[01:25:09] And he's been doing this for a long time

[01:25:11] And he's been doing this for a long time

[01:25:13] And he's been doing this for a long time

[01:25:15] And he's been doing this for a long time

[01:25:17] And during this independent production

[01:25:19] That only cost like $2 million

[01:25:21] He and almost everyone else did a lot of their own stunt driving

[01:25:23] Because of that

[01:25:25] The stunt driving sequences themselves

[01:25:27] Aren't particularly exciting

[01:25:29] There's a sequence where it's supposed to be

[01:25:31] This big chase and it ends in a big air field

[01:25:33] Where there's like no real danger

[01:25:35] Of like running into anything

[01:25:37] Or anything like that

[01:25:39] If you know this

[01:25:41] But he used his own cars for the film

[01:25:43] So I don't

[01:25:45] know a lot about movies but when it's a low budget and you have to use your own

[01:25:48] cars you don't really want to suggest them to things like a born movie where

[01:25:52] that they're going upstairs or you need like 19 Lincoln Continental. It does hold

[01:25:56] back a movie though that's called Hit and Run and supposed to be. Yeah the movie is called Hit and Run.

[01:25:59] It's not called Open Air and Not. But yeah I did like what he was shooting for

[01:26:06] here and I wish that like he would have had the money to pull it off a

[01:26:10] little bit better that he had a little bit sharper of a script but I

[01:26:13] didn't dislike it and there's there are some really funny bits in it though the

[01:26:17] best one because it comes out of nowhere too is they're they're pulling into like

[01:26:20] a motel to like rest after driving part of the way to Los Angeles and they walk

[01:26:25] into the wrong room and it's just like a four-person old people orgy and

[01:26:29] they're just sitting there naked and they're like oh my god what the fuck

[01:26:33] was that and then later when Bradley Cooper is coming after them because

[01:26:37] he's the villain in the movie they walk into the same room by accident

[01:26:40] because they think that he's in there and so it happens again. Bradley Cooper is

[01:26:44] particularly good in this movie though because he plays just this asshole crime

[01:26:48] guy who's got dreadlocks and he has a great moment where he gives like a

[01:26:55] speech to this guy who's in the grocery line with him it's this big black guy

[01:26:58] and he's like listen man he's like I don't know if you want to buy that

[01:27:02] food for your dog he's like because it's like she's made of a lot of

[01:27:04] chemicals it's not really good for him and like the guy gets pissed at him

[01:27:07] and he gets in his face and he's like okay you know I'm sorry I'm sorry I

[01:27:10] just I just care you know about the dog so it goes out and then all of a sudden

[01:27:13] like he hooks the guy with a leash and like drags him and like is like slamming

[01:27:17] dog food in his mouth and everything and the it's such this was like there was

[01:27:21] like this was the bit of cleverness that I wish they would have been able

[01:27:23] to like fit into like the movie elsewhere because so much of it felt

[01:27:28] like it was like Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell acting out like a lot of

[01:27:32] real relationship squabbles which probably because they were in a

[01:27:35] relationship when they did this yeah well and I read that actually part of it

[01:27:37] the movie itself was kind of inspired by the dynamic that they had when he was

[01:27:41] still dealing with his addiction struggles and how she didn't trust him

[01:27:45] because of that and like that's kind of what he's like that's what works in

[01:27:48] the movie right it feels authentic but the script itself rest of it yeah it's

[01:27:52] hard but so so Bradley Cooper he's talking to me he's because he

[01:27:56] threatens a guy with a gun to like to eat more dog food or else is gonna

[01:27:59] shoot him and like he says no and he's like this is what I'm talking about

[01:28:02] man he's like I just threatened to kill you unless you eat some more of this

[01:28:06] dog food and you won't even eat it but you're gonna give that to your dog how

[01:28:11] fucking profound is that and so like he's crazy but like that's hilarious too

[01:28:16] there's we've talked about a thousand times over the best part about a lot

[01:28:21] of films is the villain yeah and so if you and honestly Bradley Cooper's

[01:28:26] villain right there is not wrong no yeah you know and so that when the

[01:28:31] villain is not wrong necessarily you kind of do side with them and you believe a

[01:28:34] little bit more and it makes more effective film so even this film is

[01:28:37] insane and stupid in that moment that's a real moment where you're like well I

[01:28:41] mean he's not wrong yeah the dick yeah it's a it was it was fine I do I wish

[01:28:47] it was a little bit better interesting about this is Roger Ebert gave us a

[01:28:52] three out of five or sorry 3.5 out of four stars Richard Robert gave the

[01:28:58] film an F it is a film that either people like or they do not yeah and so I

[01:29:04] are you in the middle of the road about it Brad do you love her hit I love it no

[01:29:07] you like it what I was getting what I said like no no no no no no no

[01:29:11] people who love it or hate it and everybody goes it was fine so it's

[01:29:16] better right 50% it was fine yeah see okay Brad is you said you call oh it's

[01:29:22] either people are you love it like in the reviews it seems it is literally

[01:29:26] the audience score is 48 and the critic scores like 48 like it is it is fine

[01:29:33] but no that means is one with people who love it or they hate it yeah I know

[01:29:37] there was a lot of good and bad about the film do you love it or hate it neither

[01:29:42] so you said calling your friends he did right I mean there's a lot of no he

[01:29:46] literally everybody in this movie is like either a friend of his or a friend

[01:29:49] of Kristen Bells yeah Sean Hayes Jason Bateman Beau Bridges Ryan Hansen

[01:29:53] David Kekner Bradley Cooper Sean Hayes in this movie he's Sandy Osterman it's a

[01:30:01] who's why is there a scene that I missed it was a pretty good joke but yeah that's

[01:30:08] why right but no it literally is just just deck shipper like bring in him and

[01:30:13] Kristen and my assumption is this is his shot right he's like I'm gonna I'm

[01:30:18] going to have the opportunity to make a feature film and I need my friends to

[01:30:21] help me yeah right yeah that's that's it we made it's just a big long

[01:30:25] discussion one and a lot of it is because Nate went on his you know big

[01:30:28] diatribe and cut our mics I will cut you so quickly again I know and it's just

[01:30:35] one of those episodes where you know we we honestly weren't super jazzed about

[01:30:38] the trailers we're gonna talk about anyway and we would have talked about

[01:30:40] that but now we won't now we won't now and one of them was gonna be a TV

[01:30:45] series and Ben got really kind of pissy about it so it's fair then he

[01:30:49] gets pissy about a lot of things these days though like you don't watch a

[01:30:52] movie he assigns you and all of a sudden he's mad well that's right

[01:30:55] you're talking to the wrong person really really bark up the wrong tree there

[01:31:00] also I was fucking I watched the first stupid James Franco Planet of the Ups

[01:31:04] movie oh yeah rise of the planet I like that I'd like to let go it was fine

[01:31:08] yeah yeah I like it the first one's fine they get infinitely better and I'm

[01:31:11] very excited it is a series that I did finally recommit to do this to

[01:31:14] brezz been talking about this for a while that they're better than I thought

[01:31:17] were you watching me so I'm gonna do this I'm committing this week I'm

[01:31:20] gonna watch both of the next ones I'm very excited to hear what you think of

[01:31:23] Donald and I'm taking them seriously I don't want I'm not gonna have that

[01:31:26] chip in my shoulder I really am gonna I'm excited to just like give them that

[01:31:29] lens that they need to have okay yeah I think that's good is there anything

[01:31:32] coming out this weekend that I need to see the beekeeper no the beekeepers

[01:31:36] already out it's already out it's got decent reviews about this past weekend

[01:31:39] I actually don't really remember what's coming out this week but well that's

[01:31:42] fun thank you so much for listening to this extended episode of go fix

[01:31:47] yourself Nate I love you buddy I don't feel like you do sometimes well when you

[01:31:51] got my mic I get really upset Brad I'll do it again yeah I love I love you I

[01:31:56] especially when everybody bye
